On Wednesday, James, 17, was recognized as the organization's David Wehrmeister Club Youth of the Year and the winner of the organization’s top prize — the Carson Family Scholarship, which provides full college tuition and expenses. He has been accepted at the University of Toledo, where he plans to major in civil engineering. “I am grateful, and I am hyped up. … It’s a big accomplishment, and I am proud of myself,” James said in an interview, adding that he is going to continue to work at least as hard in college as he did in high school.

Phase 1 of Schneider Park revitalization celebrated with ceremony
The city of Toledo Parks and Youth Services and community partners celebrated the completion of the first phase of the Schneider Park Revitalization Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the park on Thursday. Attending the event at the Schneider Park Soccer Complex, 2706 Schneider Road, were Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz, representatives from the offices of Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown and U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur (D. Toledo), along with Mannik & Smith Group, and local soccer clubs. After detailed planning and 18 months of construction, the initial phase of the award-winning project is finished. It includes new soccer fields, the implementation of sustainable bioretention systems, a new entrance off Detroit Avenue, a loop walking trail, and other amenities that highlight the city’s dedication to sustainable urban development and inclusive recreational opportunities for all residents. “The park is open, ready for use, and now the public can enjoy what is, believe it or not, the only public space in Toledo where soccer can be played,” said Mr. Kapszukiewicz. “It’s not just any space, but truly one of the jewels of northwest Ohio.”

Editorial: Queer was OK after all?
A proposal on Toledo Council’s agenda Wednesday would allocate $50,000 of the city’s general funds to creating a health-care model for gay and transgender people. The goal of the legislation appears to be to establish a process to grant a stamp of approval for which local health-care providers could qualify to indicate they are welcoming to gay and transgender patients. Read more Blade editorials We reserve opinion on whether this is an appropriate expenditure for the city. All people should receive health care that is appropriate and in which patients feel respected.
Historic overlay district proposed for Dorr Street corridor
An effort to develop a historic overlay district reflective of and reminiscent of the historic Dorr Street corridor was announced Wednesday. “It's really been a journey to get to this point,” Robert Smith, founder and president of the African American Legacy Project, said at a news conference. “It seems like these are the first steps, but the first steps really started 20 years ago when we first started documenting Dorr Street and trying to impress upon the community the value of this community, and we think that today represents a milestone that we're about to reach.” The overlay would require specific design standards for development and serve to protect the character of the area in keeping with the residents’ desire to recognize and preserve historical attributes. Before the mid-1970s, when the city began an extensive federally backed “urban renewal” project in central Toledo, the Dorr Street corridor was a hub of social life where dozens of businesses — most owned and operated by minorities — flourished.
