United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties: Health Checks, golf outing keep May busy
This past month has been a busy month for the United Way: three Health Check events and one golf outing! First, the Health Checks … Our volunteer team and interagency partners have helped us to host Health Checks in Adrian, Temperance (Bedford) and Dundee. We had a record 137 attendees in Adrian, 103 in Bedford and nearly 100 in Dundee. We’re a little tired but thrilled at the numbers. Many attendees have come to rely on the $20 blood panel testing as a low-cost alternative for their comprehensive blood work. I, too, try to get my blood work completed at a spring and fall Health Check, respectively. (It beats a $200+ co-pay, even with insurance coverage). Talking to the attendees made me further realize how important affordable health care is to all of us. And a program like Health Check is so needed and necessary.
Anthony Wayne softball tops Perrysburg for regional title
CLYDE, Ohio — The third-ranked Anthony Wayne Generals will make their third trip to the Division I state softball semifinals in four years after taking a 9-1 victory over eighth-ranked Northern Lakes League rival Perrysburg in Friday’s regional final at Clyde High School’s Joe Wilson Field. The Generals (29-1), who have posted a 114-12 overall record since 2021, will face second-ranked Pataskala Watkins Memorial (30-1) in a D-I state semifinal next Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron. “This is an incredible accomplishment for these seniors, AW coach Ron Myers said. “They're playing their hearts out right now, and we're running on all eight cylinders. We've peaked at the right time of year. “When you get to the final four in the state, though, everybody is great. These seniors are great kids, and they're fun to be around. I'm going to enjoy having one more week with them.”

Lake tops Ottawa Hills for 1st baseball district title in 10 years
DEFIANCE — A year ago, Ryan Wagner missed the baseball season after breaking one of his collarbones in the second game of the year. On Saturday, the Lake senior pitched the Flyers to their first district championship in a decade. “This means everything,” said Wagner after Lake rallied past Ottawa Hills 8-4 in the Division III district finals. “Not being able to play last year and then to win the league and a district championship is amazing.” A trip to the regionals at 2 p.m. Thursday at Patrick Henry, where the Flyers will face Bucyrus Wynford, did not look promising after Ottawa Hills took a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Anthony Wayne finishes 4th in 1st team tennis state tournament appearance
WOOSTER, Ohio — With a tight-knit roster built around its coach’s two sons, the Anthony Wayne boys tennis team used a lineup with depth unmatched this spring in Northwest Ohio to put together the best finish in program history. The Generals went the extra mile in showing their solidarity by living up to a preseason pact that ultimately got paid when they reached the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I state team tournament for the first time Saturday at the College of Wooster. “After they qualified for this final four, they all went and buzzed their heads,” coach Jim Sutto said. “They actually said before the season started that they’d do it if they [made it to state]. A couple of them were rolling their eyes, like ‘Why did I agree to this?’ There were a couple who were excited to do it.” Although Anthony Wayne didn’t have any singles players or doubles teams reach the state individual tournament May 23-24 at Wooster, its depth helped it beat St. Francis 3-0 on May 17 to clinch a berth in the state final four.
Bedford soccer reaches district finals with lopsided win over Lincoln
TEMPERANCE – Bedford’s girls soccer team is more offensive this season. “We definitely learned how to score this year,” Bedford coach Kellie Grosteffon said. “We’ve had a really great year. We’ve scored like 55 goals this year. This team has always struggled with that.” It was no struggle for the Mules Thursday as they...
