Division I softball: Anthony Wayne, Perrysburg face unranked foes in regional semifinals
The two top-10 ranked teams from the Northern Lakes League's Buckeye Division — champion Anthony Wayne (25-1 overall, 12-0 NLL) and runner-up Perrysburg (24-4, 10-3) — are each headed to Clyde High School for separate regional softball semifinal matchups Wednesday. No. 3 Anthony Wayne will take on unranked Brecksville-Broadview Heights (21-6) in a 4 p.m. semifinal, while No. 8 Perrysburg will open at 1 p.m. against unranked North Ridgeville (17-5). St. John's lacrosse avenges regular-season loss in regional quarterfinal victory over Ottawa Hills
An ambitious schedule prepared St. John’s Jesuit for the postseason, and a regular-season loss to Ottawa Hills planted the seed for revenge. The Titans got their retribution on an unseasonably warm evening on Thursday, defeating Ottawa Hills 8-5 in a Division I, Region 5 quarterfinal. The victory avenged a 10-5 loss to Ottawa Hills on April 22. “It felt really good to come out here and show what our team has been through,” St. John’s midfielder Jude Dzierwa said. “Losing to them the previous game, [this] felt really good.” No. 7 seed St. John’s (11-7) advances to the regional semifinal where it will play second-seeded Rocky River on Tuesday. INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — As the injuries mount up for the Toledo Walleye, the team continues to be snake-bit. Despite putting together a complete team effort, the Walleye are one loss away from elimination from the Kelly Cup playoffs. The Mavericks took a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference finals with a 2-1 victory in overtime in Game 4 on Friday night. Toledo defenseman Matt Anderson gave the Walleye a 1-0 lead with 6:54 left in regulation. But Kansas City knotted it back up moments later on a goal by Jake Jaremko.
Toledo baseball stays alive in MAC tournament after beating Kent State
AVON, Ohio — Toledo baseball will continue its run in the 2024 Mid-American Conference Baseball Championship after scoring the first six runs of Thursday’s game to pick up an 8-2 win over Kent State at Crushers Stadium. The fifth-seeded Rockets (26-31) will now face Miami at 10 a.m. Friday after No.4-seed Miami (27-26) fell to Bowling Green 12-4 on Thursday. High school boys tennis: Toledo area's 2024 state qualifiers
The Ohio High School Athletic Association's boys tennis state tournament will take place Thursday and Friday at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. Three singles players and three doubles teams from the Toledo area qualified through sectional and district tournaments to reach the state event. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on both days. Mud Hens falter in series opener at Louisville
LOUISVILLE — The Louisville Bats scored four runs off the Toledo bullpen, rallying for a 7-5 victory over the Mud Hens on Tuesday in the opener of a six-game series at Louisville Slugger Field. Akil Baddoo’s RBI double got the Mud Hens on the board in the top of the first, but the Bats took the lead with Edwin Rios’ three-run blast in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Vilade hit a solo home run for Toledo in the second, and Justyn-Henry Malloy added a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead.

Bryan blanks Maumee to advance to first Division II regional softball final
SHELBY, Ohio — A big hit in the first at-bat, along with remarkable defense and stellar pitching, helped Bryan’s softball team achieve its furthest advancement in the OHSAA tournament. Freshman Amiyah Langham drilled a home run on a full count to start the game, while sophomore Thea Staten fired a two-hit shutout with the help of errorless defense behind her, as Bryan blanked Maumee 5-0 in a Division II regional semifinal on Wednesday at Shelby High School. After falling in the regional semifinals the past two seasons, the Golden Bears (20-5) broke through to make their first regional final in program history. “Super excited for our girls. We’ve been here three times, so it’s nice to be able to break that barrier and make it to the next level,” Bryan coach Samantha Molina said. “These girls are so deserving, that senior class has been excellent in so many different things, so awesome to see them get to the next level.”
Toledo men's basketball coach Kowalczyk's contract extended through 2027-28 season
The University of Toledo has extended men’s basketball coach Tod Kowalczyk’s contract through the 2027-28 season. His base salary will remain at $361,000 and marketing compensation will be $225,000, with several incentives that can increase his pay. Kowalczyk will receive 10 percent of his base salary if the suites at Savage Arena are sold out for the season. He will get five percent if Toledo plays in the MAC title game and 10 percent if the Rockets win the MAC tournament. If Kowalczyk leaves UT, he owes the university $325,000.
