Sticker shock at the garbage can as Skagit trash rates jump 30%
SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. — Skagit County government is being hit with a 40% increase in costs from the companies that collect trash and recycling. The county's contract with its two garbage providers is up and costs are increasing. Samish Indian Nation debuts first village in 125 years to 'bring the elders back home'
The Samish Indian Nation on Friday debuted a new affordable housing project spanning 2 acres of tribal land in Anacortes. The project, called Xwch'ángteng, contains 14 two-bedroom cottages that are ADA-ready, along with a new community center and playground. Samish tribal members who are seniors, disabled, and low-income will get priority for the new cottages, which are each roughly 1,000 square feet. Tom Wooten, tribal chairman of the Samish Indian Nation, said there hasn’t been a Samish village in over 125 years. “We’ve always had people living here, residing at our traditional territories as individuals, but this is the first time we’ve located [Samish elders] in one place,” Wooten said at a ribbon cutting ceremony for Xwch'ángteng on Friday.

A lane closure will take place from 6 a.m. Sunday (5/19) to 6 a.m. Monday (5/20) on the right lane of southbound Interstate 5 between Lakeway Drive (MP 253) and Samish Way (MP 252). The lane reduction allows crews to carry out essential repair work on the interstate and provides time for the new concrete to properly cure. The Samish Way ramp will remain open throughout the duration of the project. While driving through the work zone, please remember that even if crews are not visible, work is still ongoing, and it is crucial to slow down to maintain safety. Motorists should anticipate additional travel time due to the lane closure and plan their routes accordingly.
