English Language Assessment on ongoing project for Great Bend students
English Language (EL) teachers Kelsey Scheuerman and Traci Miller at Riley Elementary in Great Bend are administering the Kansas English Language Proficiency Assessment (KELPA) to 135 students this week. It's one test that, once passed, the student never has to take again. That makes it a big deal for students trying to learn a new language.

Barton CC students named to President’s List for fall 2023
Barton Community College has named 245 students to the President’s List for the fall 2023 semester. To qualify for this honor students must have been enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours and maintained a grade point average of 4.0 on a 4.0 or "A" letter scale. Abilene.
Marcus Garstecki named sixth president of Barton Community College
During a special Board meeting on Jan. 30, the Barton Community College Board of Trustees announced Dr. Marcus Garstecki as Barton’s sixth president. With over 25 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Garstecki has led enhancements in student recruitment efforts, implemented a comprehensive enrollment plan, and helped develop strategies for leveraging scholarship dollars, all of which led to increased enrollment at Northern State University (NSU) in Aberdeen, S.D. He currently serves as the chief enrollment management officer at NSU.
KWEC adds new education specialist to staff
Pam Martin served as the education specialist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for nearly 15 years. Her retirement last September opened the door for a new hire at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. Natalie Unruh graduated from the University of Wyoming in December and accepted the position as new education specialist earlier this month. She's now ready to share her knowledge with area students and wildlife enthusiasts.
