Great Bend cleans water features after storm; pool opens Saturday
A pair of Great Bend’s outdoor water features have been cleaned up following last weekend’s strong storm that kicked up a lot of dirt. The Wetlands Waterpark already had the pool filled up in preparation of this Saturday’s opening day. Great Bend Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said so much debris and dirt blew into the pool, staff elected to empty the pool, shovel dirt out and power wash the surface.
Humble Pie opens second pizza store with Larned location
The City of Larned received a new restaurant to order pizza. With a store already established in Pratt, Humble Pie opened their second restaurant in Larned. The pizza establishment announced the new restaurant was coming this past winter and welcomed their opening day last Thursday with a ribbon cutting from the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce.
Progress on downtown café & outdoor courtyard in Great Bend
Progress continues at the southwest corner of the Forest Avenue and Williams Street intersection in Great Bend for an outdoor courtyard. Referred to as the Landing Restaurant and Outdoor Gathering Place, the property mentioned plans providing space for a restaurant and loft space to go along with the outdoor space.
Great Bend Summer Street Stroll Farmers Market returns today
Let the summer activities begin. Each Thursday, from today through October, the Barton County Health Department and the city of Great Bend offer the Summer Street Stroll Farmers Market at Jack Kilby Square in downtown Great Bend from 4-7 p.m. The market features a variety of fresh produce and handmade items from local vendors.
Musical acts announced for Ellinwood's After Harvest Festival
Three nights of live music with only one cover charge. That's one of the appeals of Ellinwood's After Harvest Festival. The 51st annual event is scheduled for July 18-20. AHF Chairperson Nancy Baird said Kendall and Mia Kaufman with Aces & Eights will headline the Saturday night dance on the brick streets of downtown Ellinwood.

The Kansas Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program is set to kick off on June 3. 2024. Are you at least 60 years old and meet income guidelines? Are you 55 years old and a member of an Indian Tribal Organization? Then you might qualify to receive free fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and honey from local farmers markets. Eligibility is determined by household size, but benefits are distributed individually, meaning any others in your household also meeting the age and income requirements may apply for and receive their own benefits.
BAM planning baseball mural at Al Burns Field in Great Bend
If you build it, they will come. The famous line from "Field of Dreams" is often applied to any development project. In Great Bend, it can actually apply to baseball. Considerable renovations have been made to Al Burns Field at Veterans Park, home of the Great Bend Bat Cats. Barton Arts Movement (BAM) Co-Chair Andrea Bauer said the new dugout at the baseball field was a perfect spot for the next mural.
IGNITE the Night in Ellinwood on Friday
From Great Bend Economic Development... The IGNITE Rural Business Competition, organized by Great Bend Economic Development, continues to ignite the entrepreneurial spirit in Barton County, providing a platform for local businesses to thrive and innovate. Designed to empower emerging ventures, IGNITE has been a catalyst for transformation, exemplified by the recent success of 10-39 Cafe in Ellinwood. Through the competition, 10-39 Cafe's owners honed their business plan, received mentorship, and navigated through rounds of eliminations to reach the live finals of the 2023 event. Their hard work paid off as they clinched 2nd place, earning a $30,000 grant, and secured the People's Choice award, adding an extra $5,000 to their prize money.
New management, Hoisington pool ready for opening day
The submission deadline for pool forms with the City of Hoisington was May 1. The forms allow Hoisington citizens access to the pool all summer without getting charged each time they go. With residents allowed four guest passes as well, Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said more than 3,000 names were submitted.

Koch, Kansas All Star Big Band offering a night of swing in Wilson
Twenty-eight years of the Kansas Sampler Festival came to a close in 2017. The Big Kansas Road Trip was started by Kansas Sampler in 2018 to keep the community connection going. Two or three counties are featured each year, and the 2024 season includes Ellsworth and Lincoln counties. Great Bend's Kurtis Koch and the Kansas All Star Big Band will provide the free entertainment Saturday, May 4 from 7-10 p.m. at the Historic Midland Railroad Hotel in Wilson.
J. Robert Spencer presents last concert of GBCCA season
J. Robert Spencer brings his show, “7,000 Miles to Broadway,” to the Golden Belt Community Concert Association for its final concert of the season. The concert is set for Friday May 3, at 7 p.m. in the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
