Local Inmates Celebrate Educational Milestones at Larned State Correctional Facility
Barton Community College and Larned State Correctional Facility (LSCF) recently acknowledged the educational accomplishments of LSCF inmates. On April 10, a ceremony was held to recognize inmates who completed educational programs, including associate degrees, high school diplomas, and workforce training certificates in areas like welding technology, occupational safety and health (OSHA), and business management and leadership.
Lincoln sixth graders in Great Bend already planning for the future
Area seniors will be graduating from high school in a few short weeks. Many will go to college and some will begin new careers. At Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend, those decisions are being shaped early on. Great Bend preschool getting more colorful as it nears completion
Following a luncheon at Lincoln Elementary School Thursday, members of the USD 428 Board of Education took a tour of the new Little Panthers Preschool and District Education Center at 1809 24th Street. Much progress has been made on the building ahead of an open house scheduled for Aug. 1. Superintendent Khris Thexton has been pleased with the progress and outcome.

New head coach excited about wrestling potential in Great Bend
Sometimes a coach can let his record do the talking. Pending approval from the USD 428 Board of Education, Lars Lueders has been named the new wrestling coach at Great Bend High School. In his 14 years as head coach, Lueders has a 123-33 dual record, and his teams have produced 73 state medalists, 14 state champions, and five high school All-Americans. He got his start in Dodge City and is ready to move back into the Western Athletic Conference.

LaChelle Fitzmorris answered an advertisement in the Rush County News years ago asking for volunteers to organize an all-school reunion for Otis-Bison High School. Now, 15 years later, Fitzmorris is the president of the Otis-Bison Alumni Association and she is gearing up for the reunion this summer that will bring hundreds of former Otis-Bison graduates back to town.

Central KS Catbackers award scholarships to local students
From the Central Kansas Catbackers... In 2016, the Central Kansas Catbackers created a scholarship program for local students that plan to attend Kansas State University as freshmen in the fall. The committee awards 5 - $1,000 scholarships each year. We received several outstanding applications and faced a difficult challenge selecting five recipients.
Great Bend Middle School teachers receive grants
On Wednesday, April 17, three Great Bend Middle School teachers received a heartwarming surprise; they were announced as grant winners provided by Credit Union of America. Mrs. Stein, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Tittel will use the grant funds to bring new opportunities to their students through a drone program (Stein), a t-shirt press (Williams), and a book-rebinding machine (Tittel).
