Enduring beauty: Mural fest enlivens East Toledo streets
The East Side never looked so bright as on Sept. 28 at the first River East Mural and Art Festival, as approximately 60 artists — some as far away as the West Coast — showed up to paint murals. With the East Side art space River East Gallery, located at 601 N. Main St., serving as their headquarters, the artists painted, sprayed, and applied chalk throughout the day on walls all around the surrounding area. As the gallery’s website indicated, the artists were “turning forgotten walls into canvases of artistic expression that not only beautify the city but also foster a renewed sense of community pride and engagement.” According to the event organizer, local artist and River East Gallery co-owner Chris “Chilly” Rodriguez, the inaugural festival was a raging success.
South Toledo gallery accepting ofrendas for upcoming exhibition

The exhibit, which will run from Oct. 22 to Nov. 22 at the gallery at 1222 Broadway St., will showcase the cultural tradition of commemorating the lives of loved ones who have died. It will feature elaborate ofrendas (altars honoring the deceased); art installations; and educational tours that discuss the heritage behind this Mexican tradition. For more information about the exhibition or to register an ofrenda for the event, go to sqacc.org.
Simple precautions can prevent long-term problems for those tackling fall clean-up
To rake, or not to rake? For thousands of Toledoans facing a deluge of autumn leaves, that is the question. While summer is the most popular time of the year for impromptu visits to the emergency room, the fall months present their own set of challenges stemming from raking leaves, cleaning the gutters, pumpkin carving, and other seemingly innocuous tasks. “We see injuries daily, and it’s not just slip and falls, but it’s cuts, it’s bumps, it’s bruises, it’s broken bones,” said Dr. Jay Taylor, a Mercy Health emergency room physician based in Perrysburg and Sylvania.
Hendel: Parkinson's fund-raiser 'paints the town'
PAINT the Town was presented by the Parkinson Foundation of Northwest Ohio on Sept. 26, at the Toledo Country Club overlooking the Maumee River. Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressive movement disorder that affects the lives of about one million people across the United States with approximately 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year. In Ohio alone, over 30,000 people are afflicted with PD. Red and fuchsia lighting and tulip arrangements set the festive scene which included fine cuisine, lively music, a silent auction of “experience” packages, and a curated art auction by the Toledo Artists’ Club. Mmm ... there was a buffet of scampi, smoked salmon, oysters Rockefeller, beef tenderloin and more. The signature complimentary “Pink Tulip Martini” with Tito’s Handmade Vodka, an event sponsor, was the perfect compliment as the Rick Luettke Jazz Quartet played cool tunes.
