The Tillamook High Cheesemakers boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams capped a very successful season with a total of 18 athletes competing in the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union Class 4A state tournament February 22-23 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. Sappington Wins State Championship
Jack Sappington is a state champion. The senior captain led from start to finish in the 100 breaststroke to win the first boy’s individual swimming title since 1987. Sappington solidified his name amongst the elite swimmers in school history this past Saturday at the state meet in Beaverton. Swimming in lane 3, Sappington made sure there was no doubt who was the best breaststroker in the state this year. Mook Mat Club takes three state championships
Mook Mat Club wrestlers had a strong showing at the Oregon State Championship meet in the last weekend of January, with three grapplers emerging as champions. Jace Lummus, Adan Garcia and Bianca Merino each won their weight classes, while Rowan Barton and Lizzy Niemi placed second, Jaxson Hopkes, Brayton Bennett and Caleb Torres placed third, Lily Barton placed fifth, and Olivia Niemi and Brody Mooney placed sixth. Chess for Success sends dozen to state competition
More than 50 students from across northwest Oregon converged on the Garibaldi Community Center for Tillamook County’s Chess for Success Tournament on February 10. Tillamook swimmers saved their best for last, the last meet with the full team in attendance that is. The Cheesemakers boasted a full 100% of the team’s participants achieving at least one personal record during the meet. Mook at Alderbrook kicks off season
The Mook at Alderbrook began its second season of golf under new management with the Fore the Love of Golf Tournament on the weekend of February 10. Tyler Udenby and David Lacock had the low gross and net scores of the one-man scramble formatted tournament, respectively, winning gift certificates to the Bunker Grill. Kody Dalton and Ted Lane finished in second and third for gross score, while Derrick Brown and Graham Brunes did the same for net. All those placing can pick up their certificates at the pro shop at the course. Lady Cheesemakers fall to St. Helens
Tillamook High School’s girls’ basketball team lost a disappointing home game to the St. Helens Lions on February 13, falling 56-34.
