Shelby woman wins $1 million lottery prize
CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A Shelby woman is celebrating after she scratched off a $1 million lottery prize this month. Tawanna Calhoun stopped at BJ's Quick Stop on Fallston Road and tried her luck on a $50 scratch-off ticket. It was Calhoun's lucky day as she revealed a $1 million-winning ticket, North Carolina Education Lottery officials said.
Animal shelter left with limited resources after tornado
Gaston County's animal shelter has been unable to access its network since the tornado on May 8, leaving them without phones and other internet-based capabilities. "We're very limited on our resources, just because we don't have access to the network," said Dr. Jessica Hilderbran, administrator and veterinarian at Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement in Gastonia.

"The Veteran's Battlefield" will be shown at 6 p.m. June 13 at the Gaston County Public Library's main branch, 1555, E. Garrison Blvd. in Gastonia. The free event is open to the public.

Clothing designed and sewn by Gaston County students will be on display Saturday at a Gastonia fashion show for people whose attire requires special modifications.
