Sunshine Sounds: Rounding up the 2024 summer concerts
Does Toledo have too much country music? Promoter Hunter Brucks of HB Concerts thinks so. That’s why when he was booking his Promenade Park acts for the 2024 summer season, he didn’t book a single country act, satisfied that Toledo had enough country acts represented. “Toledo is really oversaturated with country music so we made a really concentrated effort on being diverse with our shows. We’re doing stuff that’s never been down at Promenade Park,” said Brucks. Of the seven acts booked for the riverfront this summer, none of them are country music.

Rita's Reflections: Making feathered friends comes easily
If there is such a thing as a bird whisperer, I might be one. Last spring, Larry estimated there were over 200 sandhill cranes in the field across from our house. They are large birds with wingspans of 6-7 feet. I was certain they weren’t going to peck our eyes out like they did in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror/thriller the “Birds,” but it was spooky to see that many. And according to the "Peterson Field Guide to Birds" it is uncommon to see sandhill cranes in the Midwest.

Original Sub Shop provides upgraded lunch fare
The Original Sub Shop & Deli in Toledo is a simple restaurant — most of the menu consists of sandwiches, as the name suggests, and it’s only open during lunch hours from Tuesday through Saturday — but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a visit. The ambience inside is very welcoming, with plenty of artwork, plants, and a surprising amount of seating for such a small building. It manages to feel busy without being overwhelming or crowded, and the layout allows most of the tables to stay out of the way of the steady stream of people grabbing to-go orders. Overall, it’s a nice place to be. But the most important thing about the place is its sandwiches. Most of the menu can be had on their All Crumbs Artisan Bakery sub bread, but can also be ordered on rye bread or as a panini. The sub bread is good, not great, but definitely serviceable. And, more importantly, it’s sturdy, able to handle whatever they stuff in it without falling apart or spilling toppings everywhere.

Bestselling author Graham Moore to visit Sylvania
Graham Moore, a multitime New York Times best-selling author and Oscar-winning screenwriter for The Imitation Game, is headed to Sylvania on Thursday. In the Starlite Theater’s inaugural authors series, Mr. Moore will share insights into his writing process and inspirations for his new book: The Wealth of Shadows, a historical novel about an ordinary man who seizes the opportunity to join a secret mission to bring down the Nazi war machine — not with bullets, but by crashing the economy. “I just became fascinated by a story that I'd never heard of before,” Mr. Moore said of the book's main character, Ansel Luxford. “The book is told from his perspective. You're kind of inside his head,” he said. “The whole book you only see what he sees. You only hear what he hears. You only know what he knows.”
