VFW parade to close East Toledo streets
A sequence of East Toledo streets will be closed Monday morning during the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Memorial Day parade. The parade will step off from the VFW Post 4906 at 2161 Consaul St. and proceed northwest across Front Street to Fire Station 13, then reverse on Consaul to Bakewell Street, northeast on Bakewell to Bogar Street, southeast on Bogar to Caledonia Street, and southwest on Caledonia to end at Consaul. Street closings will begin at 9 a.m. Local traffic will be allowed when it does not endanger participants or spectators.

Negative stigmas, social media misconceptions causing decrease in military numbers, recruiters say
TOLEDO, Ohio — Military recruiters said they have noticed a decrease in the number of people joining the military over the years. Charmayne Akins, Petty Officer of the U.S. Navy, said they typically go around visiting high schools in Toledo to recruit students who fit the criteria they are looking for such as an athletic build.
School districts now required to have cell phone policies
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine recently signed a bipartisan bill regarding cell phones in the classroom. H.B. 250 originally focused on high school graduates obtaining a military seal. Now it also addresses cell phone policies in schools. The legislation unanimously passed in the Ohio General Assembly on May 8. Each school board will be required to adopt a cell phone policy by July, 2025. Local school districts are currently reviewing their own policies. Toledo Public Schools does not currently have a policy in place specifically related to the use of cell phones in schools, James Gant, deputy superintendent, said in a statement.
Eckel Junction Road improvements start in Perrysburg
Eckel Junction Road improvements start this week in Perrysburg. Milling and paving of the first course of asphalt will begin on Tuesday. Concrete removal and replacement will follow the week of June 3. The project, which is between North Dixie Highway and the railroad tracks, consists of milling and resurfacing, and curb replacement. Traffic will be maintained at the State Rt. 25/Eckel Junction light. The rest of Eckel Junction will be maintained as a single lane in each direction. The entrance to Mercy Hospital also will be maintained.
Perrysburg derby is June 1; city pool also opens
The city of Perrysburg’s annual fishing derby will be from 8 to 11:30 a.m. June 1 at the large pond located at Three Meadows Park, 700 Three Meadows Dr. The rain date is June 8. The derby is open to children ages 16 and under. They must be accompanied by an adult for the entire derby. Registration will take place on site the day of the derby. Prizes will be awarded for the longest perch, bass, and catfish. There will also be random prize drawings.
