Monday Memories: The haunting notes of Taps made Gold Star mothers weep during Memorial Day service
Formerly a call for lights out, a revised version of Taps has been played for military funerals and other ceremonial events since the Civil War. In this 1950 Blade archive photo, a group of Gold Star mothers, some weeping, listened as the bugler sounded the notes during a Memorial Day ceremony at the Civic Center memorial. One hundred Gold Star mothers, women who had lost a child in military action, were given places of honor at the service. They heard four ministers of different faiths pray for peace as planes of the Ohio National Guard’s 37th Division scattered flowers from above. The parade and service attracted 25,000 spectators. North Korea invaded South Korea weeks later, igniting the Korean War. More than 36,000 American soldiers died in that conflict. Buffalo Rock Brewing Company set to open 2nd location in Oregon
OREGON, Ohio — A new brewery is coming soon to Oregon. Buffalo Rock Brewing Company strives to be a social gathering place, says co-founder Troy Burns. "We don't have a bunch of TVs hanging around and all over the wall, and it's for that exact purpose; I want people to come, sit down and talk," he said.
11 locals on Monroe County's War on Terror Memorial
MONROE — The War on Terror Memorial is one that was very familiar to me living in Monroe and working at Monroe County Community College, as it was on my daily commute to work past Veterans Park that runs along the banks of the River Raisin on North Custer Road. It also brought back memories of my “9/11 moment” — where I was when 9/11 happened (like earlier generations who witnessed President John F. Kennedy’s assassination).
To the editor: Lake Erie needs solutions, not more finger-pointing
The executive vice president of the Ohio Farm Bureau recently wrote an op-ed calling talk from leaders in Lucas County “nothing short of absurd” in connection with a lawsuit filed in federal court on May 1 aimed at cleaning up Lake Erie. There seems to be an inherent misunderstanding on the part of the Ohio Farm Bureau’s leadership. We do not oppose farmers. We oppose those who break the law. Submit a letter to the editor That’s why the Board of Lucas County Commissioners and the city of Toledo are suing the U.S. EPA. We believe the agency is violating the central statutory requirement for remediating waters, such as Lake Erie, that have been declared impaired: establishing a Total Maximum Daily Load, or TMDL, that complies with the Clean Water Act.
Nebraska Avenue warehouse under 7-day evacuation order
The owner of a central city warehouse was issued a “serious hazard order” after crews responded to the location Thursday on concerns with how chemicals were being stored at the site. The order, issued to property owner Joe LaRosa, mandates the evacuation of the building for seven days. Crews from the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency responded on Thursday to the Omni Polymers facility at 1925 Nebraska Ave. They evaluated the threat to public safety being posed by practices at the 180,000-square-foot warehouse. As part of their initial response, Nebraska Avenue between Brown and Woodstock Avenues was closed for most of Thursday.
Perrysburg council postpones water, sewer rate increase for a month
A increase in Perrysburg’s water and sewer rates has been delayed by a month. City council voted at a meeting May 21 to postpone the new rates from July 1 to Aug. 1. After the meeting, council President Kevin Fuller, who chairs its utilities committee, said members want to provide some additional time for public comment. “We want to allow for this to be available to the public for as long as we can,” Mr. Fuller said. “The dates were changed so that we could give a full three readings and not have to introduce it as an emergency. That way the public has plenty of time to comment.”
ODOT plans new roundabouts in intersection safety package
Three new roundabouts in Wood County plus others in Henry, Fulton, and Defiance counties are part of an $86.9 million package of safety-oriented projects the Ohio Department of Transportation announced statewide. The projects that Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks announced Thursday also include “intersection improvements” at Alexis Road and North Detroit Avenue in North Toledo. All but a handful of the 28 projects in 22 counties are at intersections, and 19 projects involve building single-lane roundabouts at mostly rural locations where ODOT said crashes are frequent, although the announcement did not include crash data. “When it comes to our roadways, safety will always be our top priority,” Gov. DeWine said. “Our goal is to save lives by investing to improve dangerous intersections.”
Briggs: The real joke is on Priceline.com. Toledo should celebrate what it offers
If you have watched any TV lately, you’ve probably seen the new Priceline.com commercial. The ad features pitchman Kaley Cuoco going on about great hotel deals and a sun-soaked poolside couple that just can’t believe their ears. Their stay at the family-friendly Quick-Inn-Sleazy — I think that was the name of the place — could be up to 60 percent off? Mom announces, “We might just leave here with another vacation baby,” which grosses out her two young children, Paris and … Fort Lauderdale. “At least it wasn’t Toledo,” Cuoco then tells the latter kid.
Lenawee, Monroe County to meet in all-star football matchup
Monroe and Lenawee County football fans are banking on one game being better than two. Next month, seniors from the two counties will face off in the first Lenawee County vs. Monroe County football All-Star game. The county vs. county idea that was floated a couple of years ago by coaches and athletic directors has finally come to fruition. ...
