United Way of Monroe/Lenawee Counties: Health Checks, golf outing keep May busy
This past month has been a busy month for the United Way: three Health Check events and one golf outing! First, the Health Checks … Our volunteer team and interagency partners have helped us to host Health Checks in Adrian, Temperance (Bedford) and Dundee. We had a record 137 attendees in Adrian, 103 in Bedford and nearly 100 in Dundee. We’re a little tired but thrilled at the numbers. Many attendees have come to rely on the $20 blood panel testing as a low-cost alternative for their comprehensive blood work. I, too, try to get my blood work completed at a spring and fall Health Check, respectively. (It beats a $200+ co-pay, even with insurance coverage). Talking to the attendees made me further realize how important affordable health care is to all of us. And a program like Health Check is so needed and necessary.

Lake tops Ottawa Hills for 1st baseball district title in 10 years
DEFIANCE — A year ago, Ryan Wagner missed the baseball season after breaking one of his collarbones in the second game of the year. On Saturday, the Lake senior pitched the Flyers to their first district championship in a decade. “This means everything,” said Wagner after Lake rallied past Ottawa Hills 8-4 in the Division III district finals. “Not being able to play last year and then to win the league and a district championship is amazing.” A trip to the regionals at 2 p.m. Thursday at Patrick Henry, where the Flyers will face Bucyrus Wynford, did not look promising after Ottawa Hills took a 4-0 lead after one inning.

Mud Hens game suspended in 4th, will resume Thursday
LOUISVILLE — The Toledo Mud Hens took a 4-1 lead over the Louisville Bats on Wednesday before an hour-long rain delay led to the game being suspended in the middle of the fourth inning. The contest will resume at 5:05 p.m. Thursday, and Thursday’s originally scheduled game will be played as a seven-inning game 30 minutes after the completion of Wednesday’s game. Michael Trautwein led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to give Louisville the initial lead Wednesday, but Toledo’s Buddy Kennedy did the same to tie the game in the top of the third. Jace Jung led off Toledo’s half of the fourth with a double and later scored on an Akil Baddoo RBI single to give the Mud Hens the lead. Starting pitcher Randy Wynne walked Justice Bigbie with one out, leading the Bats (26-20) to make a call to the bullpen. Baddoo stole third, and Bligh Madris knocked a two-run single off reliever Alex Young, scoring Baddoo and Bigbie. After two groundouts ended the half-inning, the game entered a rain delay and was eventually called for the night.
Five Region teams win or share track and field league crown
ERIE – Whiteford’s boys nipped Erie Mason by a single point 179-178 in Tuesday’s league meet, leaving the teams in a tie for first in the overall standings. “Both teams came out to compete at a high level which is difficult after a three-day turnaround from regionals,” Whiteford coach Jay Hockey said.
