Big innings push Louisville past Mud Hens
LOUISVILLE — A three-run first inning and four-run fifth aided the Louisville Bats in a 9-3 win over the Toledo Mud Hens on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field. With the victory the Bats took the series, winning four of the first five games. Toledo and Louisville will complete the six-game set at 1:05 p.m. Sunday. In the home half of the first, the Bats loaded the bases with one out. They pushed a run across on Peyton Burdick’s groundout that scored Livan Soto. Following Burdick, Michael Trautwein tripled to right field bringing home Rece Hinds and P.J. Higgins for a 3-0 lead. The Bats made it a four-run cushion in the fourth on Blake Dunn’s solo home run.

Walleye extend Western Conference finals with Game 5 win at Kansas City
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Persistence paid off for the Toledo Walleye as they finally saw a couple of big breaks go their way, and they extended the Western Conference finals with a 3-1 win against the Kansas City Mavericks on Saturday night. Brandon Hawkins scored a power-play goal in the first period, and defenseman Jacob Graves scored the game-winner early in the third period of Game 5 of the Western Conference finals before a crowd of 5,598 at Cable Dahmer Arena. K.C. pulled goalie Cale Morris with 1:50 left in the game, and Brandon Kruse secured the victory with an empty-net goal with 55 seconds remaining. Game 6 will take place here on Monday at 5:05 p.m. as Toledo looks to push the series to a decisive seventh game on Wednesday.

Divisions II softball: Maumee and Bryan to meet in regional semifinal
Some familiar teams are looking to make their way through regional softball action this week. In Division II, Maumee (20-8, 10-4 Northern Buckeye Conference) returns to the regionals after reaching the D-II regional finals a year ago when the Panthers lost 10-5 to eventual state champion Tallmadge. The Panthers will face Northwest Ohio Athletic League champion Bryan (19-5, 7-0), which is making its third straight trip to the D-II regionals under fifth-year coach Samantha Molina, a 2014 Maumee grad and former Panthers player. That game is set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shelby High School. The regional final against either Lexington or Akron Springfield is scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday.
Monroe County to play Lenawee in All-Star football game on June 21
Monroe and Lenawee County football fans are banking on one game being better than two. Next month, seniors from the two counties will face off in the first Lenawee County vs. Monroe County football All-Star game. The county vs. county idea that was floated a couple of years ago by coaches and athletic directors has finally come to fruition.
Mud Hens falter in series opener at Louisville
LOUISVILLE — The Louisville Bats scored four runs off the Toledo bullpen, rallying for a 7-5 victory over the Mud Hens on Tuesday in the opener of a six-game series at Louisville Slugger Field. Akil Baddoo’s RBI double got the Mud Hens on the board in the top of the first, but the Bats took the lead with Edwin Rios’ three-run blast in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Vilade hit a solo home run for Toledo in the second, and Justyn-Henry Malloy added a two-run shot for a 4-3 lead.
