Napoleon advances to baseball regionals with victory over Defiance
ARCHBOLD, Ohio — Napoleon defeated Defiance 13-3 on Saturday, winning a Division II district baseball title for the first time since 2011. The No. 2 seed Wildcats (20-9) beat the top-seeded Bulldogs (20-6) at Memorial Park. Napoleon advances to play Huron in a regional semifinal at Bowling Green's Carter Park at 2 p.m. Thursday. Napoleon senior Lucas Gerken went 3-for-4 on Saturday with a home run and five RBIs. Junior Parker Woods had three RBIs, senior Blaine Ford went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, and senior Devin Dietrich was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs, one RBI, and one steal. Senior pitcher Jacob Shadle got the victory, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out three.
Division I track and field: Liberty Center girls claim regional championship
FOSTORIA — The Liberty Center girls just beat out the girls from Coldwater, edging the Cavaliers 59-58 for the team title at the Division III regional track and field competition that wrapped up on Friday night at Fostoria’s Memorial Stadium. En route to the win, the LC girls had a total of four girls punch tickets to the upcoming state meet in Dayton next week. After Coldwater, Margaretta (51) finished third in the team standings, Woodmore (50.5) was fourth, and Riverdale (47) fifth. Tinora took home the boys regional title with 63 points. Margaretta came in second at 52 points, Wayne Trace (44) finished third, Edgerton (43.5) fourth, and Ottawa Hills (36) fifth. The top four competitors in each event advance to the state meet.
Ottawa Hills, Lake advance to D-III district finals
DEFIANCE — Ottawa Hills is one win away from a third consecutive district championship following an 8-1 victory over Archbold. Standing in the way is Lake, which outlasted Otsego 10-6 in the late game of the Division III districts, setting the stage for Saturday’s noon showdown with a regional berth on the line. “We got clutch hits, we scored in five of the six innings, and we got pretty good pitching,” summed up Ottawa Hills head coach Chris Hardman, who led the Green Bears to the state semifinals a year ago and now has his squad at 18-9 this season against a very challenging schedule. Deadlocked at 1-1, Ottawa Hills pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third and pulled away with one in the fourth and two in each of the fifth and sixth innings.
Anthony Wayne softball tops Perrysburg for regional title
CLYDE, Ohio — The third-ranked Anthony Wayne Generals will make their third trip to the Division I state softball semifinals in four years after taking a 9-1 victory over eighth-ranked Northern Lakes League rival Perrysburg in Friday’s regional final at Clyde High School’s Joe Wilson Field. The Generals (29-1), who have posted a 114-12 overall record since 2021, will face second-ranked Pataskala Watkins Memorial (30-1) in a D-I state semifinal next Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron. “This is an incredible accomplishment for these seniors, AW coach Ron Myers said. “They're playing their hearts out right now, and we're running on all eight cylinders. We've peaked at the right time of year. “When you get to the final four in the state, though, everybody is great. These seniors are great kids, and they're fun to be around. I'm going to enjoy having one more week with them.”
Anthony Wayne finishes 4th in 1st team tennis state tournament appearance
WOOSTER, Ohio — With a tight-knit roster built around its coach’s two sons, the Anthony Wayne boys tennis team used a lineup with depth unmatched this spring in Northwest Ohio to put together the best finish in program history. The Generals went the extra mile in showing their solidarity by living up to a preseason pact that ultimately got paid when they reached the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I state team tournament for the first time Saturday at the College of Wooster. “After they qualified for this final four, they all went and buzzed their heads,” coach Jim Sutto said. “They actually said before the season started that they’d do it if they [made it to state]. A couple of them were rolling their eyes, like ‘Why did I agree to this?’ There were a couple who were excited to do it.” Although Anthony Wayne didn’t have any singles players or doubles teams reach the state individual tournament May 23-24 at Wooster, its depth helped it beat St. Francis 3-0 on May 17 to clinch a berth in the state final four.
Perrysburg, Anthony Wayne win to meet for regional softball title
CLYDE, Ohio – Northern Lakes League rivals Perrysburg and Anthony Wayne have advanced to Friday's Division I regional softball finals at Clyde High School's Joe Wilson Field. Perrysburg’s eighth-ranked Yellow Jackets (26-4) edged North Ridgeville 3-2 in Wednesday's first regional semifinal, and AW’s third-ranked Generals (28-1) topped Brecksville-Broadview Heights 5-0 in the second semifinal at Clyde. The NLL foes square off at 5 p.m. on Friday. Perrysburg got a clutch two-out, two-strike single from sophomore Kylynn Thomas that drove in classmate Yesenia You from second base with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh, then held on to win. Maison Gerrard, the Jackets' fourth-year pitcher, scattered 10 hits to earn the complete-game victory.
Morenci's Kay Johnson earns 1,000th victory
MORENCI — Hall of Fame coach Kay Johnson added another milestone to her remarkable career Monday when her Morenci softball team beat East Jackson 8-5 for coaching victory No. 1,000. “It’s just another number,” Johnson said. “It’s pretty nice that I was able to make it. The two top-10 ranked teams from the Northern Lakes League's Buckeye Division — champion Anthony Wayne (25-1 overall, 12-0 NLL) and runner-up Perrysburg (24-4, 10-3) — are each headed to Clyde High School for separate regional softball semifinal matchups Wednesday. No. 3 Anthony Wayne will take on unranked Brecksville-Broadview Heights (21-6) in a 4 p.m. semifinal, while No. 8 Perrysburg will open at 1 p.m. against unranked North Ridgeville (17-5).
