North Carolina state Rep. Kelly Alexander Jr. dies at 75
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — State Rep. Kelly Alexander Jr., a scion of an influential civil rights family in North Carolina who advocated for legalizing medical cannabis, died Friday. He was 75. A family statement posted on an Alexander social media site said the Mecklenburg County Democrat died Friday morning. It didn’t say where or provide a cause of death. A former president of the state NAACP, Alexander was appointed to the House in mid-2008 and had been reelected to a Charlotte-area district ever since. He did not seek reelection this fall, telling WFAE radio in December that health issues would make it hard to run in 2024. “Kelly’s unwavering commitment to his city, district, state, and this nation has been both profound and heartfelt throughout the years,” the family statement said.

North Carolina GOP leaders reach spending deal to clear private school voucher waitlist
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s Republican House and Senate leaders said Friday that they have agreed with each other on a supplemental spending proposal that includes hundreds of millions of dollars to eliminate the state’s waitlist for private school vouchers. The new proposal includes funding for Medicaid, broadband access and the implementation of a law that forces sheriffs to comply with federal immigration agents. Both chambers are scheduled to reconvene next week for a vote that will likely send the bill to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper, whose expected veto can be overridden by the legislature’s GOP supermajorities. The proposal sets aside an additional $463 million for this school year and next for the state’s Opportunity Scholarship Program largely to clear its waitlist, as a surge in applications occurred after the General Assembly eliminated income caps to qualify last year. Not enough money was initially earmarked to cover everyone, leaving about 55,000 children on the waitlist and many parents frustrated. Lawmakers had failed to agree on a budget adjustment deal that included voucher funding before the legislative session ended in June.

RFK Jr. notches wins in North Carolina and Michigan in his effort to get off ballots
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. scored a pair of legal victories Friday in the battleground states of North Carolina and Michigan, and a setback in Wisconsin, in his quest to get his name off of the ballots in some states after he suspended his campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump. North Carolina’s intermediate-level Court of Appeals issued an order granting Kennedy’s request to halt the mailing of ballots that included his name, upending plans in the state just as officials were about to begin sending out the nation’s first absentee ballots for the Nov. 5 presidential election. The court — a three-judge panel ruling unanimously — also told a trial judge to order the State Board of Elections to distribute ballots without Kennedy’s name on them. No legal explanation was given. In Michigan, its intermediate-level Court of Appeals ruled that Kennedy should be removed from the ballot, reversing a decision made earlier this week by a lower court judge.
