Watch: Tacoma’s Jake Slaughter hits home run over Cheney’s giant center field wall

Jake Slaughter has joined an exclusive club of Tacoma Rainiers baseball players. In Monday night’s game against Salt Lake, Tacoma’s second baseman slaughtered — sorry, we couldn’t resist — a baseball, hitting a home run over the giant center field wall.

The home run went 452 feet, according to the Rainiers. The center field wall sits at 425 feet and is 29 feet tall. He is just the third Tacoma player to clear the center field wall in an official Triple-A baseball game. The others were Shin-Soo Choo in 2005 and A.J. Zapp in 2004.

There’s some debate whether current Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh also cleared it during the 2021 season. Others have cleared the wall during batting practice.

Tacoma won the homestand’s opening game, 7-3. Jason Vosler recorded his team-leading 24th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double, a run batted in and a strikeout. The two hits raised his batting average on the year to .280.

The Rainiers are in town through July 3 before a road trip and break. They return to Tacoma July 19.
