AAA to activate free program for Labor Day weekend to take home impaired drivers

With Labor Day weekend just around the corner, AAA-The Auto Club Group is activating its "Tow to Go" program as they prepare to rescue impaired drivers nationwide over the weekend.

"By providing this program, AAA leaves drivers with no excuse for driving under the influence of drugs, alcohol or impairing medications," said Mark Jenkins, the group's spokesperson. "However, we remind people to treat Tow to Go as a last resort. Instead, make advanced plans for a safe ride home."

The free program, available even to non-AAA members, will be activated in Florida as well as several other states throughout the country. The program has been around for 25 years and has taken nearly 30,000 drivers off U.S. roadways.

Guidelines and how it works

• Provided from 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3
• Confidential local ride for one person and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius
• Appointments cannot be scheduled in advance. It is designed as a safety net.
• In some situation, AAA may need to make other arrangements to get an impaired individual a safe ride home.
• Tow to Go may not be available in rural areas or during severe weather conditions.
