JetBlue is eliminating its direct flight service from Tallahassee to Fort Lauderdale due to a "lack of customer demand," according to the airline.

The low-fare carrier debuted its much-anticipated flight service in January to much fanfare after more than a decade of courting JetBlue. The airline issued a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat:

"Exiting a market is a difficult decision and we were privileged to have served Tallahassee. Due to underperformance and lack of customer demand, we will end operations in Tallahassee. We are doing this to make investments in other parts of our network."

The New York-based airline's final day of service in Tallahassee will be Oct. 27 and "impacted customers will have their tickets automatically refunded to their original form of payment."

As previously reported, the direct flight to South Florida was billed as an option for  international access to more than 100 destinations, including Latin America, South America, the Caribbean, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Tallahassee's new flight was part of the airline’s plan to expand its reach in Florida and came on the heels of other in-state travel routes launched in Jacksonville with direct flights to Fort Lauderdale.
