Morgan & Morgan's motto is "for the people." Now they're for Dena Coukoulis.

After a police chase landed in her lap and sent her to the hospital Tuesday morning, Coukoulis retained the iconic personal injury law firm to take legal action. Founder and name partner John Morgan is representing her, along with attorney Corey Portnoy from the firm's Tallahassee office.

Coukoulis woke up before 3 a.m. to the bedroom walls of her downtown home crumbling around her and a car dangling over her head — "a harrowing incident no one should ever have to experience," they said in a statement provided to the Tallahassee Democrat.

"While Mrs. Coukoulis is thankful to be alive, her life has been altered forever through no fault of her own," Morgan and Portnoy said.

They added: "We are exploring all possible avenues to achieve justice for her and help her rebuild her life, and we will do everything in our power to determine the parties responsible for this crash and hold them accountable for their actions.”

It wasn't immediately clear whether that included legal action against the police department and the city of Tallahassee.

Morgan is nationally known for his firm, which now boasts over 1,000 attorneys in all 50 states, and was the force behind successful ballot initiatives in Florida that legalized medical marijuana and boosted the state's minimum wage. He also has been described as a "political rainmaker," donating large amounts to Democratic candidates.

According to the Tallahassee Police Department, a 15-year-old drove a stolen car the wrong direction on Park Avenue while fleeing from officers. He lost control, went airborne and smashed into the side of the home on the street, shooting right over Coukoulis' bed where she was sleeping.

The flying debris from the crash resulted in numerous stitches in Coukoulis' arm and head and killed her 13-year-old dog named Teki who was sleeping in a stroller next to the bed.

Before the chase made it to Coukoulis' home, TPD said the boy stole the car from two adults at the Springwood Townhomes on Old Bainbridge Road. As he fled with the car, he "intentionally struck" one of the men who tried to stop him.

The 15-year-old was arrested on felony charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, reckless driving, aggravated fleeing and eluding causing injury, hit and run causing injury and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.

The Tallahassee Democrat doesn't name juveniles unless they face charges in the adult criminal justice system. A police spokesperson said he was medically cleared and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
