RABUN COUNTY, Ga. - A northeast Georgia man has been missing since July 5, according to his family. Vaughan Callenback, 77, was last seen by his daughter, Joanie Callenback Knight, at her home in Franklin County, North Carolina, on July 4. The very last known time he was seen was on July 5 at United Community Bank in Clayton, where he deposited a check his daughter had given him, according to NowHabersham.com.

A reported motorcycle wreck on Hollywood Highway outside just after 9 a.m. Friday injured the rider of a scooter. Habersham County E-911 dispatchers received a call at 9:05 a.m. on August 16 reporting a rider down on Hollywood Highway near Clover Hill Lane between Bob Patton Road and Hills Crossing Road outside Clarkesville.

The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Unit stayed busy last month. In addition to the Independence holiday traffic enforcement campaign that resulted in the removal of multiple impaired and reckless drivers from the roadways, successful operations were conducted that removed wanted felons and illegal narcotics from the community. The sheriff’s office initiative to recruit highly qualified, motivated deputies within Special Operations met realization with the hiring of K9 Deputy Holden Helcher, a second-generation deputy with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office. HCSO Chief Deputy Robin Krockum was voted by North East Traffic Enforcement Network (NETEN) attendees to continue as the NETEN coordinator during the July NETEN meeting hosted by HCSO.

An upstate man is in custody after being accused of kidnapping a woman. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office says 26 year old Bradley Thomas Moore of Westminster was arrested at a home in the Foxwood Hills neighborhood Tuesday morning.

Rob Moore, who serves as public information officer for the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and Habersham County Government, attended training Aug. 4-7 in Athens. The third-annual Law Enforcement Community Engagement (LECE) Conference is sponsored by Clarke County Sheriff John Q. Williams and his staff as a way for agencies across Georgia to grow their community outreach efforts. The theme of this year’s conference was “Engaging Minds and Empowering Our Communities for Success”. Moore attended classes taught by state and local law enforcement officials, including: “Empowering the Community through Social Media” by Nelly Miles, public affairs director for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation; “Community Engagement Unfiltered” by Chief Courtney Gale; “Georgia Alert System” by Assistant Special Agent in Charge Chris McKeown of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation; and “Chaplains and their Impact” by Clayton County Police Chief Ken Roberts and his chaplain staff. Following an opening ceremony in which DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha Ramos spoke, Moore was able to meet briefly with Ramos. The opening ceremony also included Athens-Clarke Mayor Kelly Gritz and Sheriff Williams. “I am thankful for the opportunity to attend these valuable sessions to learn more about ways our sheriff’s office and our county government can better engage with the community,” Moore said. “I enjoyed visiting with law enforcement leaders, including Sheriff Williams, Chief Deputy Frank Woods, Lt. Clarence Grier, Public Information Officer Keith Sims, and others from Clarke County, as well as Murray County Sheriff Jimmy Davenport, the Sugar Hill Marshals and K9, the Clayton County Police Department chaplain corps, and others. Not all the ideas I brought back are specific to law enforcement agencies, so I’m looking forward to implementing them throughout the scope of my duties.” Prior to the breakout sessions, those attending were able to visit the University of Georgia football training facilities with UGA Coach Bryant Gantt, director of player wellness. Dan Silk, Associate Vice President for Public Safety for the University of Georgia, provided the keynote address for the conference. The event concluded with a prayer breakfast featuring Sheriff Williams and more than a half dozen pastors and ministers.
