TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A 16-year-old boy was arrested near a Home Depot in Riverview on Friday after he was accused of attempting to kidnap a woman by holding her at knifepoint with a saw blade.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the teenager entered the store and attempted to buy a Visa gift card with an alleged stolen credit card. He then walked further into the store.

A woman later noticed the boy was following her, according to HCSO.

“(The suspect) approached her, stating he was having a bad day, and revealed a saw blade,” a HCSO news release said. “He then instructed her to follow him to the bathroom, telling her to ‘act like you know me’ and ‘don’t ask for help’ while holding the blade and giving her directions.”

Once they reached a more popular area of the store, the woman sprinted away from the suspect and told employees what happened. The teenager ran out of the store, but was caught at a nearby store.

“I can’t imagine what would lead such a young individual to commit this crime,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “We are in awe of the victim’s quick and brave thinking. Her courage in a terrifying situation not only saved her life but also helped ensure this dangerous suspect was arrested. I am thankful for the actions of the store employees and customers who assisted in this situation; their willingness to speak up is commendable and exemplifies the strength of our community.”

The boy was arrested and charged with armed kidnapping, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of personal identification, fraudulent use of a credit card (over $100), and possession of a stolen credit card.
