TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — July 1 brings 184 new laws to the Sunshine State.

A few new laws will impact police departments and law enforcement agencies across the state.

Where the Tampa Police Department appointed a new citizen review board in 2021, they must re-establish one to align with new state statutes.

The board must now consist of three to seven members, one of which is a retired law enforcement officer, and they must all be appointed by a police chief or sheriff.

Some lawmakers paint the picture as an effort to keep law enforcement officers from being mistreated by the public.

Rep. Dianne Hart of Tampa believes the measure strips Floridians’ right to voice their opinions about police wrongdoing.

By assigning officers to board positions, local governments like the Tampa Police Department will be able to review cases of misconduct within their agencies.

Officers will also now be required to take further domestic violence training.

They will be taught to use a series of questions to determine if a victim is at risk for harm.

Also in effect on July 1, parents now have 30 days to surrender their children rather than the previous seven-day window.

This is a modification to what’s known as the Safe Haven law, which saved 73 babies in 2021 according to the official website.

You can legally surrender a baby at approved locations like hospitals or fire stations.
