Lightning Make Sneaky Good Addition With Veteran Forward

The Tampa Bay Lightning's biggest signing on the first day of free agency was, of course, Jake Guentzel. He will be a crucial part of their top six for the next seven seasons and make a sizeable impact.
However, the Lightning also made a rather intriguing addition on the first day of free agency by signing Zemgus Girgensons to a three-year, $2.55 million contract ($850,000 cap hit). While he may not be the flashiest of signings, he has the potential to be a solid addition to the Lightning's bottom six, especially at that low of a price.
Girgensons, 30, will give the Lightning an experienced, hard-working forward to work with in their bottom six. The 2012 first-round pick is not known for his offense but rather for his strong defensive play and grittiness. Because of this, he should be an excellent addition to the Lightning's penalty kill next season. He is also known for his great versatility, being able to play both down the middle and on both wings.
Girgensons spent each of the first 10 seasons of his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres. Because of this, he has yet to play a postseason game, so he will surely be extra motivated to play for a contender like the Lightning.
Overall, Girgensons has all the makings of being a solid depth addition for the Lightning. While he will not be the most significant force offensively, his solid defensive play, grit, and leadership will make him impactful. Let's see how he performs with the Bolts from here.
