TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Tampa Police Department (TPD) officer has been placed on leave after he was arrested for domestic battery, the department said Thursday.

TPD said Cornelius Young was arrested while off-duty on Wednesday after a verbal argument with a woman he knew turned violent. The woman sustained minor injuries.

“To say this is disappointing is an understatement,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our thoughts are with the victim involved. We are committed to transparency with our internal investigation. The allegations don’t represent the mission of the Tampa Police Department.”

Young had been employed with TPD since November 2023. He remains on administrative leave pending an investigation.
