Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield Drawing Attention For New Look

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed quarterback Baker Mayfield on a three-year, $100 million deal in free agency after he put forth a brilliant 2023 campaign.

While hosting a youth football camp late last week, Mayfield appeared to have slimmed down and spoke about how motivated he is for this coming season.

“I definitely am in the best shape I’ve been in a long time,” Mayfield said, via Rick Stroud of The Tampa Bay Times . “I just found my routine, found a gym and some trainers that I really like and it’s important. You learn that throughout the process [and as] the years go on. Honestly being able to stay in one place throughout the offseason helps, too. I found some great people to help me get to this point.”

When it looked like Mayfield’s career was hanging in the balance last offseason, the Buccaneers threw him a life line with a one-year prove-it contract.

Mayfield went out and enjoyed what was probably the best season of his career, throwing for 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 94.6. Most importantly, he led Tampa Bay to an NFC South division title and guided the Bucs to a Wild Card Round playoff win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

Can Baker Mayfield lead the Buccaneers to another surprising season?

In spite of the Buccaneers’ 2023 success, not a whole lot of people are expecting much from Mayfield and Co. heading into 2024.

But that could be a mistake.

Not only does Mayfield appear completely rejuvenated, but Tampa Bay boasts one of the NFL’s best receiving tandems in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. The Bucs also have continuity on their side, as they re-signed all of their important free agents this offseason (other than linebacker Devin White, who seemed to be falling out of favor with the team anyway).

Additionally, the Buccaneers have a decent offensive line and some impressive talent on the defensive side of the football.

Throw in the fact that Tampa Bay plays in what is probably the worst division in football, and there is very little reason to believe that the Bucs won’t be back in the playoffs next winter.

Barring an injury to Baker Mayfield, the Buccaneers should be ready to contend again this year.
