YORKTOWN, N.Y. — More than 3,000 Yorktown residents were left without power Thursday morning in the wake of severe rainstorms that tore through the area.

The two cells of thunderstorms that came through town took down trees, powerlines, and resulted in multiple road closures. Classrooms at Yorktown High School were flooded, according to Supervisor Ed Lachterman, and a home was struck by lightning, resulting in a fire. No one was injured.

Lachterman said a majority of the power outages are in NYSEG territory; ConEd’s part of town only saw some trees fall “here and there.”

“I was able to get NYSEG to prioritize us due to the number of trees and wires down and broken poles,” Lachterman said. “NYSEG’s response time has been amazing.

“We’re thankful to our first responders, and we implore our residents to stay safe, not go near any downed wires, and always assume that the wire is live,” he added. “If people see flooded areas, while there are not many, please do not drive through it. You don’t know how deep the puddle really is.”

Highway Superintendent Dave Paganelli told Yorktown News that roads are being cleared through town, and those that didn’t have wires involved are already good to go. Some roads still remain closed as work is being done.
