NOVA Seeks Nominations for New ‘Upstander” Awards

JAMISON, PA—A local social services agency is looking for nominations of people who serve as “upstanders” in the community for a new awards program.

NOVA, which supports victims of serious crime in Bucks County, defines upstanders as people of any age who take steps to offer help when they see someone being bullied. The organization is accepting nominations from community members for people who meet any or all of the following qualifications:

• Speaks up against injustice.
• Supports and stands up for others
• Leads by example.
• Fosters empathy and understanding.
• Promotes inclusion and celebrates diversity.

NOVA will honor this year’s upstanders with gift certificates and certificates of inclusion. The organization will choose one finalist from each category. Nominations are due by Sept. 20, 2024, and can be submitted via NOVA’s website.

The first-ever Upstander Awards will be presented on Sept. 29 at NOVA’s annual Upstander Day. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Epstein Campus of Bucks County Community College in Bristol.

Upstander Day is a free event that celebrates people in the community “who use kindness and inclusion to combat bullying.” That includes not only first responders like the police, but a long list of community-focused organizations that will be at the event. The event will also feature family-friendly games, crafts, entertainment, food trucks and demonstrations by first responders and other community partners.
