HAZLET, NJ: On Tuesday, August 6th at 3 PM, the Friends of the Hazlet Township Public Library hosted a ribbon cutting for the Hazlet Library’s brand new Children’s Section. This new section includes a variety of play sets, including a doctor activity center, animal care center, grocery store checkout, kitchen, and restaurant.
After a recent shelf collapse in the children’s area, the library started to think about ways in which the space could be improved as the shelf was being repaired. The result was a collection of interactive play sets for the youngest library visitors. With the help of Bayshore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the Dockery family, the project was quickly fully funded, and now the new section is ready for children to enjoy.
Lori Joseph, President of the Friends of the Hazlet Township Public Library, thanks Public Works for all of their help putting things together, and especially the Dockery Family and Bayshore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for funding the entire project. “The library is just a place for the community to come together, and this is just a new space for our youngest learners to kind of start that process of imaginative play and getting ready to read,” said Joseph.
Joe Dockery of Bayshore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu commented, “It felt great to be a part of the day, and the project overall surrounded friends, family, and some of our Bayshore students. Having grown up here in Hazlet, and now raising my family here, contributing to the local community has always been, and continues to be important to our family, and the mission of Bayshore Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Improving the lives of our students, and the local community does not stop at our academy door.”
Jennifer Berry, the Children’s Librarian, is new to the Hazlet Library and is very grateful for Public Works, Lori Joseph and Branch Manager Jennifer Brennan for making things possible. “Basically the Friends and Jenny, the Branch Manager, turned what could’ve been not a best situation into actually something very positive. They went from a shelf that was tilting really horribly and Public Works came out and helped us deal with that immediately, with all of the help from the library staff, the shifting everything around so that then we started thinking of great ideas for our space,” said Berry.
The Hazlet Library also found ways to make use of certain items they did not need anymore by giving them to local schools and libraries. Berry added, “All around it became a benefit. And then we got the sets, and they are even cuter in person. And the kids were just so excited!”
With this new Children’s Section at the Hazlet Library, children have the opportunity to create a strong connection with the library and associate their fun with reading and learning. The section is now open at the Hazlet Library, located at 251 Middle Road in Hazlet.
