DOYLESTOWN, PA—The Central Bucks School Board is undergoing more change after one of its members announced her resignation at last night’s meeting.

Mariam Mahmud, who represents Region V and serves as vice president, was expected to resign sometime during the summer because she and her family are moving out of the region. Mahmud resigned her board role effective yesterday, Aug. 13.

Mahmud’s departure is the third resignation from the school board this year. In February, two other board members—Debra Cannon and Lisa Sciscio—resigned. They complained that the three Republicans on the board were being treated poorly by the new Democratic majority. Democrats flipped the school board in the 2023 election. (For more on those resignations, see TAPinto Doylestown coverage.)

Mahmud was unable to attend last night’s school board meeting, but in a letter read by another school board member, she said that one of her goals on the board had been to hear the voices of people who are “not often heard.” Mahmud, a pediatrician, opposed many of the polices of the previous board, including a policy that allowed district residents to remove books from libraries that contained “sexualized content” and another that tried to prevent teachers from “indoctrinating” students.

More recently, Mahmud has been criticized by some members of the community for supporting the teacher serving as an advisor to the Muslim Student Association, a student club at CB West. Parents and community members complained that the teacher, Youssef Abdelwahab, has used his position to promote a one-sided view of the war in Gaza and the treatment of Palestinians. (For more on that story, see TAPinto Doylestown’s coverage.)

Candidates interested in running for the seat representing Mahmud’s district, which includes Chalfont Borough and parts of New Britain Township, need to e-mail a resume to the school district by 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 22. Resumes should be sent to Stephanie Radcliffe at sradcliffe@cbsd.org .
