Sea Girt, NJ - During the recent Sea Girt Council meeting, Morris County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone and County Clerk Christine Hanlon unveiled plans to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, known as the Semiquincentennial. This initiative is part of a broader statewide effort under RevolutionNJ, which spans all New Jersey counties and aligns with the national framework to honor this significant milestone. Both Arnone and Hanlon have been appointed as co-chairs for Monmouth County’s theme, "Freedom's Battleground."

The main event will be chaired by former U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios. Rios emphasized the forward-looking nature of the celebration, stating, “America’s 250th anniversary is about more than reflecting on our past. It’s about honoring the contributions of those who built this country, the innovations that put us on the map and a man on the moon, and envisioning what the next 250 years will bring for our children and future generations.”

Commission Director Arnone underscored the importance of community involvement, remarking, “None of this will come to fruition without the support of our towns.” Hanlon added, “We are not alone in this endeavor. America 250 is a federal commission established nearly a decade ago, with President Obama, President Bush, and their wives named as co-chairs.” The target date for Monmouth County is June 28, 2026 where a number of events will be held including parades, fireworks, and a massive gala at a yet-to-be determined venue "large enough to hold a lot of people" said Arnone.

RevolutionNJ plays a pivotal role in ensuring that New Jersey’s contributions to the American Revolution are recognized and celebrated during the Semiquincentennial. Launched as a partnership between the New Jersey Historical Commission and the non-profit organization Crossroads of the American Revolution, RevolutionNJ’s mission is to connect New Jerseyans with their revolutionary roots. Through a combination of educational initiatives, public programming, and preservation efforts, RevolutionNJ aims to highlight New Jersey’s critical role as a battleground state during the Revolutionary War, where many decisive moments in the fight for independence occurred.

At the state level, RevolutionNJ is the official body responsible for coordinating and promoting New Jersey’s America-250 events, programs, and ceremonies. Resources for education and municipalities are available on their website, RevNJ.org. Monmouth County proudly holds the status of an official RevolutionNJ Community, reflecting its deep historical significance and commitment to celebrating this national milestone.

Hanlon elaborated on the vision driving the campaign, emphasizing the goal “to create memorable celebrations and experiences that will resonate with residents and visitors for years to come. Our mission is to honor and commemorate our rich history and its significance to the American Revolution, by sharing stories pivotal to the country’s development. We aim to generate widespread awareness and excitement through public information campaigns, and to collaborate closely with municipal governments, schools, arts communities, business organizations, and historical groups.”

Monmouth County has identified three core themes to guide its events and outreach said Hanlon: " Patriotism for Our Country , Pride in Our Communities , and Participation in the Celebration . These themes will serve as inspiration for all Monmouth County residents and visitors as they engage with the Semiquincentennial festivities."

RevolutionNJ’s efforts not only focus on commemorating the past but also on creating a legacy for future generations. By involving communities across the state, the initiative encourages New Jerseyans to explore their heritage and to think critically about the lessons of the American Revolution.
