Princeton, NJ – On Tuesday, October 22, when New Jersey Future issues its annual Smart Growth Awards recognizing the best in planning, development, and redevelopment, Princeton will be doubly represented.

What New Jersey Future describes as “the Terhune Harrison Mixed Use Village” will be one of six projects statewide to receive a Smart Growth award. That “village” consists of three inclusive apartment projects – the Alice, Avalon Princeton Circle, and Princeton Senior Living at 500 Thanet Circle – all within walking distance of the Princeton Shopping Center. New Jersey Future calls it a “transformational redevelopment knitting together several residential and commercial sites to form a revitalized suburban mixed-use village with affordable housing.”

In addition, New Jersey Future will honor the late Ingrid Reed, a longtime Princeton resident, with a posthumous Leadership Award. Reed was a founding member of New Jersey Future and former chair of the board of trustees. New Jersey Future describes Reed as “a staunch advocate who emboldened others to plan thoughtfully, sustainably, and comprehensively for the usage of the precious, limited supply of land in New Jersey. Above all professional achievements, Ingrid was a pioneering champion and a model citizen, who worked tirelessly to advance opportunities and gave her time generously to a vast network of New Jerseyans who shared her commitment to fostering a brighter future for the state.”

The 2024 celebration will be held in person on Tuesday, October 22, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center to celebrate our winners. In addition to Princeton’s Terhune/Harrison project, the Smart Growth Awards will go to five other projects in Newark, Dunellen (where a brownfield industrial site next to transit stop has been redeveloped), Asbury Park, Hoboken, and Bethlehem Township.

Ingrid Reed, who died July 27 at the age of 88, was a longtime Princeton resident – her husband, Marvin, was mayor of Princeton Borough. As described in a profile by Pam Hersh for TAPinto Princeton , Ingrid Reed served as a dean at Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs. In 1996 she joined the Eagleton Institute at Rutgers University to lead the New Jersey Project for the next 15 years. In 2009 she became the founder and board chair of NJ Spotlight. A strong supporter of local news providers, Reed also served as chair of the community advisory board of NJ PBS. Her involvement with both organizations helped facilitate the merger of NJ Spotlight with NJTV under WNET in 2019.
