Princeton, NJ – In the last week of August, we would expect some people to look ahead to what’s in store just around corner, or shortly after Labor Day. We have just such an event this week, a season preview presentation by McCarter Theatre at the Princeton Public Library on Tuesday, August 27, at 6:30 p.m.

Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen and Director of Presented Programming Paula Abreu will offer a behind the scenes overview of this season’s music, theater, dance, and spoken word events and artists. Debbie Bisno, director of university and artistic partnerships, will moderate.

Expect to hear a lot about “Empire Records: The Musical,” opening Friday, September 6, at McCarter and running through October 6.

As the press statement says, “Empire Records tells the story of a band of idealist misfits fighting to save their beloved record store from a corporate takeover. With tactics ranging from desperate to dangerous, the team comes together during a visit by over the hill pop star Rex Manning to discover the true value of friendship, love, and music—all in one extraordinary, unforgettable day.”

Also in this last week of August, and one that we did not expect, is the opening of a new play in town.

The play is “Outside the Frame,” a new drama by Drew Griffiths, produced by Chimera Productions at the Solley Theater at the Arts Council of Princeton, 102 Witherspoon Street. The play opens Thursday, August 29, with additional performances Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31.

Jeffrey Alan Davis, a high school drama teacher, and Drew Griffiths, a playwright, actor, and author, are longtime friends and collaborators and are the co-founders of Chimera Productions.

Written by Griffiths, the play is about “an artist, Martin, struggling to land his next show. But when he crosses paths with a new artist, Alex, he lets his agent and friend, Allison, know there’s something unique there. Allison is hungry to step out of the shadows of her famous mother and make a name for herself in the art world and is willing to take risks, but even she can’t predict what will happen when Alex creates a new controversial work that has consequences with permanent results, revealing a part of Martin that even his inner circle knew nothing about.”

This will be Chimera’s 16 th production. Tickets are available at the door for each performance.
