PLAINFIELD, NJ — On August 16th, the City of Plainfield held a ceremony for the dedication of the Al McWilliams Memorial Bike Trail. The trail is in honor of the late Mayor McWilliams, who was only the second Plainfield Mayor to ever serve eight years in office. He served from 1998 until 2005.

"On August 16th, a beautiful day filled with both reflection and celebration, our community came together to honor the legacy of the late Mayor Albert T. McWilliams with the dedication of a new bike trail in his name," wrote Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp, who took part in the ceremony. "The event was a powerful reminder of the impact one man can have on the lives of so many."

The bike trail is one section of a seven-mile stretch through multiple towns along the Green Brook. According to Mapp, the trail symbolizes the journey of community connection and growth that Mayor McWilliams championed. The late mayor was himself an avid cyclist who often rode with his children. In fact, McWilliams thought of the idea of a designated bike trail at Green Brook Park during his second term in office.

Commemorative signage marks the nearly half-mile trail at both ends. The trail runs between Jefferson Avenue and Rock Avenue adjacent in between the Plainfield Solid Waste & Sewer Utility transfer station and the Green Brook, which is a tributary of the Raritan River.

"As we continue to enjoy this new trail, let us remember the words and deeds of Mayor Albert T. McWilliams and strive to uphold the values he held dear—community, family, and the tireless pursuit of a better future for all," wrote Mayor Mapp.
