MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a serious crime, and police in Central New Jersey’s most densely-populated county take those offenses very seriously.

Proof is in the number of “driving under the influence” (DUI) arrests that cops in Middlesex County towns made from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024 — totaling 2,286 arrests, according to municipal court statistics that New Jersey recently released.

In our readership area, the Woodbridge Police Department made the most DUI arrests – a total of 310 – in our county. The Carteret Police Department made fewer, with 56 arrests, but that is proportionate to the borough’s smaller size with fewer officers.

“DUI is a priority enforcement initiative for Woodbridge police. Officers in our Radio Patrol and Traffic Enforcement division are always on the lookout for offenders,” Police Director Robert Hubner said.

“Our police department conducts many traffic enforcement initiatives each year, resulting in the arrest of drivers for DUI, although those initiatives are for something else, like seatbelt violations, distracted driving, or pedestrian decoy enforcement,” Hubner explained.

Capt. Brian Murphy, Woodbridge’s chief law enforcement officer, said his department’s 225-sworn officers are well-trained and “work very hard to enforce the state’s DUI laws and (senior officers) assist other less-experienced officers with training and investigation techniques. We are very proud of our officers.”

Sadly, some of Middlesex County’s DUI arrests came after fatal and personal injury accidents.

Statewide, police made 26,447 arrests for driving under the influence (DUI). Online data does not include conviction rates for each town.

First-time DUI convictions can carry heavy consequences, often based on someone’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Convictions can mean sentences of up to 30 days in county jail; loss or suspension of driving privileges; stiff fines; mandatory alcohol-drug rehabilitation classes, automobile insurance surcharges, and other state or insurance company surcharges.
