SUMMIT, NJ -- Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, MD recently updated the community on the Briant Park Pond restoration project at the Common Council meeting (July 30), and noted that during the summer the county contractor was in the process of moving the second stockpile of vegetation, which was hydro-raked from the pond.

Fagan said their goal from that point "is to remove as much from the pond as possible and funding does remain, but they are waiting on a proposal from the contractor as to the recommendation of how much more sediment they will remove.”

According to the County, “The contractor required time to allow the soils to properly de-water on site and once it was, they were cleared from the containment area.  The County is in active communication with the project consultant and contractor, who will be returning to perform additional work."

The project, which had been in the planning stages for several years, was to be completed by the end of 2023, but Union County officials announced last spring that it was relaunching the effort on April 17 , with a timeline for finishing the project within three to six months.

But now, according to County staff, “We do not have a revised timeline that we can share, but expect that the project will be completed within the next few months. We're monitoring the situation closely and look forward to sharing updates as the project moves forward. We are committed to seeing this through to its successful completion and appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work on the project.”

Mayor Fagan said, “I will continue to keep in contact with the county and will provide updates to the Summit community as I learn more.”
