    Boys HS Soccer: Wood-Ridge Shuts Out Passaic Charter in Season Opener

    Wood-Ridge's Anthony Cala had two goals and two assists in the Blue Devils shut out win Friday afternoon over Passaic Charter to open the 2024 season at home.

    WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Wood-Ridge boys soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 9-0 shut-out win over Passaic Charter on Friday afternoon at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex.

    "We are pleased with the result today, and it was a byproduct of the preseason we have had thus far," said head coach Alberico DePierro. "It was also great for several players to make their varsity and high school debuts and to keep the clean sheet."

    Senior Anthony Cala put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard early at :45, scoring off an assist from junior Daniel Myrto. Junior Samuel Santamaria then added back-to-back goals with both assists from Cala to make it 3-0.

    Cala scored again on an assist from Santamaria. Then it was senior Steven Turi's turn to score on an assist from freshman Tashi Tsaga.

    Junior Mateo Garrido closed out the first half scoring with back to back goals, with assists from senior David Castro and junior Lucas Mendoza. Wood-Ridge led at halftime, 7-0.

    Both Wood-Ridge second half goals came from Myrto, one on an assist from Castro and the other unassisted.

    Goalkeeper Chase LoPresti had a shutout in net.

    "The result allows us to enjoy the holiday weekend but not for too long as we face a truly difficult opponent Wednesday, who last year was in the sectional final," DePierro added.

    The Blue Devils are back in action on Wednesday, September 4 at 4 p.m. when they host North Arlington at the WRAC.
