Sparta High School Football Drops 2024 Home Opener to Montville

SPARTA, NJ – The Spartans took a loss against the Montville Mustangs at the first football game of the 2024 season under the lights on Thursday. Leaving the field with a score of nine against 33, Sparta is sure to show determination for the next few games.

While the game amassed an impressive student section, the players were not able to secure a victory for their hometown. However, Brody Tanyeri and Shane Hoover scored a 26-yard field goal and accumulated a total of 174 passing yards.

Tanyeri picked off a Montville pass as well.

Luke Brown and Brady Shagawat demonstrated athleticism through both  rushing and receiving  yardage. Shagawat snagged four passes for 61 yards.  Quaterback Hoover connected with  Brown 11 times for 55 yards.

Hoover completed 23 of 36 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown.  Montville had three interceptions in the match up.

The players displayed sportsmanship through plays and represented a state of teamwork at the first game of the season. While they may have lost, upcoming juniors exemplify that they are here to play.

The Sparta varsity football squad will play at Lakeland on Friday with a 6:30 kickoff.
