The news originally came in May 2024 from a press release in which JJ Fleeman, CEO of Ahold Delhaize USA shared, “As the largest grocery retailer on the East Coast, Ahold Delhaize USA and its local brands have a rich heritage in the markets they serve, with loyal customer bases, trusted products, and a reputation for being an integral part of their local communities. Over the next several years, we will strengthen the market position for each of our brands, including the revitalization of Stop & Shop.”

In 2022, the town of Phillipsburg said its final goodbyes to Aharts, located at 680 Memorial Parkway, as it was demolished due to disrepair. The store officially closed down in 2017 prior to being demolished five years later. For decades, Aharts served the Phillipsburg community as the largest grocery store. The remaining grocery stores are Aldi and Shoprite in neighboring Greenwich and Pohatcong Townships.
