    Driver charged with DUI manslaughter after police say she hit, killed pedestrian in Essex

    ESSEX COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A 59-year-old Richmond County woman is facing several charges, including DUI manslaughter, after Virginia State Police say she hit and killed a pedestrian in Essex County on Monday.

    The crash took place in the 500 block of South Water Lane in the town of Tappahannock just after 4 p.m. on Monday, July 1.

    Police said a 2003 Ford Explorer driven by Michelle King was moving north on South Water Lane near its intersection with Earl Street when she reportedly crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road.

    According to state police, King hit the curb and then a pedestrian, who died at the scene. The pedestrian’s identity has not been released as state police are still working to notify their next of kin.

    King was charged with driving while intoxicated/under the influence of drugs, DUI manslaughter, reckless driving and obstruction.

    According to police, she is currently being held at the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center in Middlesex County.
