CONCORD -- A Contra Costa County man has died from West Nile virus -- the first reported county death from the disease since 2006.Contra Costa Health said Friday in a statement that the victim lived in East County. The 2023-24 California men's tennis team was named an ITA All-Academic Team and five Golden Bears – rising seniors Alex Chang, Derrick Chen and Mikey Wright and rising freshmen Alex Aney and Timofey Stepanov – claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete distinction, the college tennis governing body announced this week. Vintage Wine Estates, a Santa Rosa-based wine conglomerate, declared bankruptcy and braced for sweeping layoffs. The company, once the 15th largest wine producer in the nation, announced on Wednesday its decision to file for bankruptcy coupled with a "mass layoff" of its entire workforce spanning across ten facilities throughout the Bay Area, as reported by SF Chronicle. Newsom urges Oakland PD to ease restrictions on police chases
Governor Gavin Newsom is urging Oakland leaders to expand their current police pursuit policy. In a letter, Governor Newsom pointed out that their limited policy is an outlier among California law enforcement agencies. The Oakland Police Department policy prevents officers from pursuing suspects at a high speed, except in incidents where the suspect is known to have committed a violent crime or if there's probable cause the person has a gun. Thousands evacuate season's biggest wildfire in northern California
A huge, fast-moving and rapidly growing wildfire in northern California has forced more than 4,000 people to evacuate as firefighters battle gusty winds and perilously dry conditions, authorities said Friday.
