    Pirates win opening round game in softball tourney

    The Perquimans County Pirates won their opening round game in the Four Rivers Conference Tournament, defeating Martin County 3-1.

    Perquimans scored three runs in the first and held the Knights to a single run in the top of the fifth to secure the win.

    Lilly Winslow and Bristyl Riddick led the Pirates’ six-hit attack, collecting two hits each. Kaydee Hunter doubled in a run and scored a run. K. Stallings also doubled while Indya Long scored a run and drove in a run. Morgan Baccus also knocked in a run.

    A. Stallings pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one earned run, five hits and five walks while striking out two. M. Stokley pitched 1.2 innings, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.

    Perquimans 15, North East Carolina Prep 0The Perquimans County softball Pirates defeated North East Carolina Prep 15-0 on Tuesday, April 30.

    The Pirates scored three runs in the first and 12 runs in the second to run-rule the game after three innings.

    Kaydee Hunter, Lilly Winslow, Bristyl Riddick and Heather Smith each had two hits for the Pirates. Winslow scored three runs and also knocked in three runs, while Hunter and Riddick also had a run batted in. Morgan Baccus had a hit and two RBIs. Indya Long also had a hit and two RBIs.

    The Pirates had 12 hits and North East Carolina Prep committed seven errors in the game.

    A. Stallings pitched two innings, giving up only two hits and striking out one. M. Stokely pitched a hitless inning and struck out two.

    Baseball

    Perquimans 10, Tarboro 0The Perquimans County Pirates shut out the Tarboro Vikings in a home conference game 10-0 on Friday, May 3.

    Perquimans scored one run in the second, five in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to run-rule the game after five innings.

    Cameron Goodrow, Sean Saunders and Ben Brown led the Pirates’ 10-hit attack, collecting two each. Goodrow, who had a double, also knocked in a run and scored a run. Saunders, who had two doubles, also knocked in two runs. Ben Brown, who also had a double, knocked in a run.

    Jacob Askew and Brady Shepherd also had doubles. Shepherd also knocked in two runs.

    Goodrow pitched four innings for the win. He gave up one hit and struck out six Viking hitters. Conner Futrell pitched the fifth inning, giving up only one hit.

    Perquimans 10, Martin County 3The Perquimans County baseball Pirates defeated Four Rivers Conference rival Martin County at home 10-3 on Tuesday, April 30.

    Martin County scored two runs in the first but Perquimans responded in the second with seven runs. Martin County scored a run in the 5th to pull within four runs, but Perquimans extended its lead to seven with three more runs in the 6th inning.

    Jacob Askew led the Pirates’ hitting attack with three of Perquimans 13 hits, including a double. He also scored two runs, knocked in two runs and stole two bases.

    Ben Brown chipped in two hits and knocked in three runs. Evan Conway had two hits, including a double, and knocked in two runs. Colon Roberts also had a home run in the game.

    Maddux Thach, who pitched two innings, got the win. He gave up two earned runs on three hits while walking four and striking out three Martin hitters.

    Cameron Goodrow pitched three innings, giving up one earned run on three hits while striking out one hitter. Conner Futrell and Will Rucker combined for two scoreless innings of work, giving up one hit, one base on balls, and one strikeout.
