Retirement study ranks Treasure Coast in top 20, but No. 1 in FL may surprise you

Stretches of beaches, access to nature, and near-perfect year-round weather are some factors driving retirees to Florida.

All three Treasure Coast counties ranked among the top 20 best places to retire in Florida, according to a new study by SmartAsset, an online source for consumer financial information.

Sumter County ranked No. 1 in Florida and Anchorage, Alaska, ranked No. 1 in the U.S.

To determine the rankings, SmartAsset looked at three factors affecting the quality of life for retirees, including tax-friendliness, medical care and social opportunities.

Martin County

• Tax burden: 14.2%
• Medical centers per 1,000: 2.22
• Recreation centers per 1,000: 0.77

• Percentage seniors : 31.2%

Indian River County

• State ranking: No. 9
• National ranking : No. 67
• Tax burden: 14.5%
• Medical centers per 1,000: 1.59
• Recreation centers per 1,000: 0.53
• Retirement communities per 1,000: 0.09
• Percentage seniors : 32.9%

St. Lucie County

• Ranking: No. 20
• National ranking : No. 166
• Tax burden: 14.5%
• Medical centers per 1,000: 1.34
• Recreation centers per 1,000: 0.31
• Retirement communities per 1,000: 0.12
• Percentage seniors : 24.2%
