For years, lawmakers in multiple states have been pushing to keep daylight saving time, or “summer time,” the year-round norm. And while rumors about year-round DST in Florida have flown around for years, we will still be falling back in 2024.

But the autumnal equinox, or the "first day of fall," will happen before we set our clocks to "fall back." And while clocks will soon be changing and leaves will soon be falling in some places, it will still feel like summer in Florida well into the fall season.

Here's when the official "first day of fall" is, when the time will change this fall and when you can expect it to start feeling cooler in Florida.

There are two equinoxes and two solstices each year. Equinoxes occur during the fall and spring and are called the autumnal and vernal equinoxes. They mark the first official day of spring and the first official day of fall each year.

The summer solstice was on a Thursday this year, on June 20 at 4:51 p.m. EDT. And the autumnal equinox is right around the corner, on Sunday, September 22 at 8:44 A.M. EDT, according to The Farmers' Almanac.

The meteorological end of summer was on Labor Day.

Did Florida get rid of daylight saving time?

Florida lawmakers introduced a bill in 2021 that would extend daylight saving time from eight months of the year to the full year.

The Sunshine Protection Act, which is a proposed federal law, has not received approval from the U.S. House of Representatives or the president, but was proposed during several congressional sessions over the last few years and was OK'd by the U.S. Senate in 2023.

Florida will still fall back this year.

Daylight saving time for 2024 began at 2 a.m. EST Sunday, March 10, for "spring forward" and will end, or fall back, at 2 a.m. EST Sunday, November 2.

What month does it cool down in Florida?

According to the National Weather Service’s September 2023 report , Florida usually has a day or two of cooler temperatures during the fall, but it typically starts to feel noticeably and consistently cooler in Florida in the winter, in November.

This means while other states are enjoying the temperate weather, crisp air and changing leaves of fall, Floridians are stuck waiting until winter months to feel real relief from the heat.

“The first shot of cooler drier air is usually rather short lived – lasting only a day or two. The real cool down doesn't usually occur until November,” The NWS website says.

According to the Farmers’ Almanac’s 60-day extended weather forecast for Florida , Floridians will still be seeing temperatures hit the 80s during September, like usual.

The average temperature expected for September in Florida this year will hover around 80 degrees (which is one degree below average) and around 9.5 inches of rain is expected throughout the month (which is about two inches more than average).
