Cole, Gonzales earn superlative honors
, Last week’s release of 2022 8-3A All District football selections saw two Teague Lions earning superlative awards, one winning First Team Academic All State, seven named to First Team spots, nine to Second Team, and 18 to the Academic All District Team. Vets remembered with wreaths at driVer Cemetery
, , A National Wreaths Across America Day ceremony was held last Saturday at Driver Cemetery between Teague and Fairfield, where 88 veterans were honored and remembered with a wreath placed on their grave. The event was sponsored by the Jonathan Hardin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). A similar ceremony was held at LaSalle Cemetery in Groesbeck that same morning, where 41 veterans were honored. The wreaths were placed by family members and by volunteers in remembrance of all veterans at both cemeteries. Citizens do not show up for public hearing on CDBG for water line
A public hearing was planned for Monday night by the South Freestone County Water Supply Corporation for the 2023-24 Texas Community Development Block Grant Program to give residents the opportunity to provide input on the use of the grant funds. No one showed up, however, so the hearing did not take place. TISD approves application for $450 million solar project
, , , , , After an hour of discussion, including some time in executive session, the Teague ISD school board approved the application for a $450 million solar project in Freestone County. The board heard details on the solar project back on April 26 for the first time. All board members were present for the meeting. Revenge, redemption, and a build-from-the-bottom dynamic finally paid off for the Teague Lions in a 43-38 win over Buffalo last Friday. 50 jobs heading for Freestone County
A company is planning to open a branch in Fairfield that will offer 50 well-paying jobs within the next five years, so they are seeking a tax abatement from Freestone County as well as the city of Fairfield. Freestone County Commissioners heard a presentation on the matter at the Dec. 7 meeting, when they also continued plans for a new building for the consolidated dispatch department; kept the burn ban lifted; and made other decisions about the county. Family Nurse Practitioner Deniese McGowan will join Parkview Rural Health Clinic’s staff in January 2023. McGowan is board-certified and specializes in hypertension; annual, school and sports physicals; chronic and acute illnesses; minor conditions and injuries; primary and preventative care; immunizations and vaccines; and more. She is a native of Fairfield. She attended the University of Phoenix for her undergraduate studies and then went to the University of Texas at Tyler for her Master of Science in Nursing. Lady Lions go 1-4 during tough week in Fairfield
, Teague’s girls’ basketball team spent a week in the defending state champions’ Maroon gym last week, losing to hosts Fairfield for their first district game before going 1-3 at the Fairfield Invitational. The Lions lost, 68-9, to Fairfield to kick off the week-long stretch on Dec. 6. The Eagles have lost just three total games in the past two seasons and have won two of the last three Class 3A state championships. Time to spread the joy of Christmas cheer to someone in need. This year, the Teague Police Department is doing something different. In past years, TPD has conducted the Blue Santa Program to help provide Christmas for underprivileged youths in the community. This year, TPD has elected to help underprivileged youths differently. Lady Lions get ready for district play
, Teague girls’ basketball took a 56-39 loss to China Spring Tuesday for their final non-conference game of the season. The Lady Lions’defense was on full display to start the game as sophomore Bethanah Owens and junior Linsey Satterwhite broke up the game with two back-to-back steals. Teague jetted out to a 26-23 lead at the half. With Lions star Jolee Haley in foul trouble, the Cougars regrouped and came out strong behind the arc. “Three-pointers really made a difference in the game…(but) some girls got some valuable experience,” head coach Lawrence Gullette said. “It’s one of those things that might cost us a little bit, but was still a teaching tool.” The team is now 3-7 as it headed into its first district matchup against defending state champs Fairfield on the road on Tuesday. “The biggest thing is to just make them uncomfortable throughout the game,” Gullette said. “We’re not going to look at it as if they’re celebrities, we’ll treat them like every other team on any given night.” Teague competes in the Fairfield Tournament today through Saturday.
Local agencies assist in nabbing burglary suspects
Two burglary suspects are behind bars in the Navarro County Justice Center after they were caught in Fairfield last week. The suspects allegedly broke into a convenience store recently on Interstate 45 in Navarro County. They were caught in Fairfield on Nov. 30. The Navarro County Sheriff’s Office obtained information on the burglary investigation, which led NCSO Detectives to the 100 block of W. Reunion Street in Fairfield. NCSO Detectives, along with Deputies from the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office, located and apprehended the two suspects that were suspected to be involved in a smash and grab style burglary at the I-45 Quick Stop located in the 16000 block of IH 45 West in Navarro County. The suspects were found to be in possession of numerous vape devices that were stolen from the store. The suspects were charged with Burglary of a Building and taken back to the Navarro County Justice Center. Further investigation of this case could lead to additional charges. Fairfield ISD law enforcement also was involved in the investigation.
Boys basketball begins season
Teague boys’ basketball took three tough losses to start off their season just before Thanksgiving Break. The Lions fell, 61-38, to the Hillsboro Eagles at home on Tuesday, Nov. 21. After an early steal and fast break from sophomore Clifford Coleman, the Eagles jumped to a 42-12 third-quarter lead. Junior Tylin Randle blocked the Eagles from adding to their 30-point lead, and junior Thailan McClennon sank a three-pointer seconds later. Freestone commissioners canvass votes in emergency meeting
Freestone County Commissioners Court held an emergency meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 22, to canvass the votes from the Nov. 8 election. County Commissioners were required to canvass, or examine, the county’s votes and turn in the results of their canvassing to the Secretary of State’s office by 5 p.m. that day. Canvassing the votes was the only item on the agenda. Elections Administrator René McBay was on hand to answer questions by the court members. She said there were minor problems with a few of the election judges being unable to pull up the poll books, but they had just forgotten the pass codes....

, , If there are two things Willie Keener Jr. is passionate about, they’re art and education. Keener, a 1991 graduate of Teague High School, gets to work with both of his passions on a daily basis. He is the fine arts director for Hearne ISD. “I am passionate about not only art, but education,” Keener said. “Education is Liberty. Freestone Medical Center excited to welcome back volunteers
Freestone Medical Center is excited to announce that the hospital’s volunteer program has been reinstated after having been shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At FMC, volunteers are an integral part of the day-to-day hospital operations, such as aiding patients within the facility, providing spiritual care, providing administrative support, and working on special projects. With wide varieties of work experience and education, the hospital volunteer staff complement the various service positions and are essential to patient care. “It’s exciting to be able to welcome our volunteers back, and it’s especially nice to see the friends and coworkers we have not been able to see during the pandemic,” says John Yeary, CEO. The hospital is actively recruiting volunteers to serve within the facility. New Community Liaison position causes heated discussion
All four Teague board of aldermen were present for the monthly meeting on Monday, Nov. 14. Alderman Place 1 Garlan Steed joined the meeting online via a zoom meeting. The hot topic of the evening was the job description for the new Community Liaison position, which has been filled by Mike Gregory. Angelia Orr, a Hill County small business owner, has won the Texas House District 13 election. “I am truly honored and humbled by the support I’ve received from the people of House District 13,” said Orr.
