Freeco girls prepare for Miss Freestone Pageant
, , , , , , , , , A total of 81 girls registered to compete in the 2024 Miss Freestone County Pageant. The Children’s Pageant will be held Saturday, June 8, starting at 9 am. The Miss Freestone County Pageant will be held on Tuesday, June 11, at 7 p.m. Both will be at the Fairfield High School Auditorium and admission is $5, both days. TISD school board members take oath of office
Three Teague ISD school board members took their oath of office during the Tuesday, May 21, TISD school board meeting. Debra Lawrence and Brian Bowers were not present for the meeting. Vicki Dimiceli - Place 5, Jason Hullum - Place 6, and Justin Lee - Place 7 took their oath of office to remain on the TISD school board. They had no opponents so there was no election. Commish extends disaster declaration
Freestone County Commissioners voted to extend the Declaration of Local State of Disaster initiated by Judge Grant regarding the series of storms that began on April 26 and have continued for several weeks. The court members approved this extension at their May 20 meeting, when they also updated the county’s drug testing policy; agreed to have the county’s insurance broker come in so they could find out any changes to the county’s employee health insurance; and made other decisions regarding the county’s finances and well-being. THS Class of 2024 graduates
A total of 90 students walked the stage on Friday afternoon during the Teague High School Commencement Exercises at Lion Stadium. The ceremony was scheduled to start at 8 p.m., but moved up to 4 p.m. because of the weather. Following the processional by the Teague High School Band, Keely Mathis delivered the invocation and Destiny Black sang the National Anthem. Senior Class President Anayeli Bailon gave a speech prior to Teague High School Principal Monte Shields giving the review of the scholarships. Aspyn Perry delivered her Salutatorian speech, and Declan Smith followed with his Valedictorian speech. Shields then presented the Class of 2024, while Teague ISD Superintendent Chris Skinner accepted. School Board President Jeff Gonzales and School Board Vice-President Debra Lawrence handed out diplomas to the graduates. Omar Perez gave the benediction followed by the playing of the Alma Mater and Fight Song by the THS Band. The graduates then threw their hats in the air and celebrated with family and friends.
Pranger named City Secretary/Office Manager
, After nearly two hours in executive session covering five different matters, Gay Pranger was named the City of Teague City Secretary/Office Manager on Monday night, May 20, at the monthly City of Teague Board of Aldermen meeting. Pranger comes to Teague after serving as the City of Coolidge’s City Secretary for the past 15 years. The board approved paying Pranger a yearly salary of $60,000. “I am very excited. Suspect charged in connection with Ramos murder
A Fairfield man has been charged in connection with the murder of Denise Lissette Ramos, 22. Julian Jefferson, 20, has been charged with capital murder. Jefferson, who is stationed at a naval base in California, is currently in federal custody on a charge for a crime unrelated to Ramos’ murder. Ramos, also of Fairfield, did not show up to her job on March 28. A welfare check performed by the Fairfield Police Department led to the residence of 800 Clark St., where Ramos’ body was found. FPD worked with the Texas Rangers, DPS and NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Services) to uncover evidence that linked Jefferson to Ramos’ death. He is awaiting extradition to Texas for his capital murder trial.
FM 80 in Teague closed due to needed railroad repairs
FM 80 at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation (BNSF) Crossing (DOT# 597189L) is currently closed for the railroad to complete needed repairs of a railroad culvert. The closure is expected to last until Friday, May 31, to allow the RR time for the repairs. Detours for the closure of FM 80 are noted below. • FM 80 Northbound traffic will detour east on FM 489 to FM 1451 North towards Teague. • FM 80 Southbound traffic will detour south on FM 1451 towards Donie to FM 489 west back to FM 80. To alert drivers, advance portable changeable message signs will be placed ahead of the closure. Mayor, aldermen sworn-in at council meeting
, , The City of Teague Board of Aldermen met in a special called meeting on Thursday, May 9, to declare the results of the canvass for the election returns of the general election of May 4,. All board of aldermen were present except for Bridget Gauntt and Mayor David Huffman. James Monks defeated Jack (Butch) Hansel 111 votes - 77 votes in the election for the City of Teague Mayor. Alderman Place 1 Ron Rasbeary and Alderman Place 3 Rhonda Jones ran unopposed. They received 130 and 147 votes respectively. Commish to go out for bids
Freestone County Commissioners saw bids opened for tree cutting and removal, and agreed to go out for bids on a new mini-excavator and also for computer software. The court took action on these matters at their meeting of Friday, May 3. As for the bids on the tree cutting, County Auditor Karen Craddock opened the four bids she had received, which were as follows: • Ryan’s Tree Service $375 per hour; • Solley & Sons - $225 per hour; or $900 for a half day or $1,800 for a whole day; • Philips Tree Service $537 an hour; and • Rutherford Tree Service - $200 an hour. The court members agreed they would need to see the companies’ bids on spread sheets so they can compare their work accurately and make a decision at that time. BIDS ON MINI -EXCAVATOR In other business, the commissioners voted to go out for bids on purchasing a mini-excavator for Precinct 3’s Road & Bridge. BIDS ON SOFTWARE FOR JUDICIAL COURT, COUNTY CLERK Also at Friday’s meeting, the court voted to go out for bids on purchasing computer software for the judicial court and county clerk.
Sheriff’s Office arrests pair for child abuse, drug charges
Two suspects are behind bars after an investigation revealed that two children were exposed to narcotics at their residence. The suspects were arrested on charges of injury to a child, endangering a child, possession of a controlled substance, tampering with a witness, and giving false information to a peace officer. The ongoing investigation could produce more charges. The investigation was launched in reference to a child abuse case. The allegations involved two teenage children being exposed to methamphetamine at a residence, resulting in one of the children being hospitalized as a result of the exposure. Four Teague ISD students were honored at the Teague ISD Students of the Year for 2023-2024 on Thursday evening, May 9, in a small banquet hosted by the Teague Chamber of Commerce at the Teague Hotel. Earning the honor were Xi’Kih McGregor - Teague Elementary School, Reese Fleming - Teague Junior High, Omar Perez - Teague High School, and Bo Self - Teague Lion Academy. FCSO makes narcotics arrests
During the last two weeks, the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office has been taking narcotics offenders off the streets. Last Saturday, a traffic stop was conducted in the Fairfield area. During the stop, the FCSO deputy on the scene noticed that the driver of the vehicle was crushing up something in his hand that was falling in his lap and driver seat. The Deputy then asked the subject to get out of the vehicle for further investigation and once doing so, the subject began resisting the Deputy. New audio/visual system on the way for district courtroom
Freestone County Commissioners took another step toward purchasing a new audio/visual system for the district courtroom so they can finally solve the problem of people not being able to hear the proceedings. The court took this step at their Wednesday, May 1, meeting, when they also heard a report on the sale of foreclosed properties; went through training in dealing with problem employees; and made other decisions regarding the county’s finances and well-being. Keith Boles was named the Dew ISD Interim Superintendent effective Tuesday, April 16, at the Dew ISD School Board meeting on Monday night, April 15. Two concerned citizens complained about sewer issues with the recent storms on April 8-9 to the City of Teague Board of Aldermen at their meeting on Monday night, April 15. Harris qualifies for state in triple jump
, Teague junior J’Kybryen Harris felt good about his distance of 45 feet, 3.25 inches in the triple jump Monday afternoon in Waco. Harris, who jumped a then-school record 45 feet at the area meet on April 12, broke the record again on Monday, which was good enough for a third-place in the Region III-3A Meet at Midway High School. Then the waiting game took place. Harris cautiously waited to learn the results from the other three region meets in Class 3A. Fortunately, none of the other third-place finishers jumped farther than Harris, which gave him the wild card berth in the Class 3A state meet on May 2 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Harris will be the only Teague representative at the state meet. The top two finishers per regional event and top thirdplace finish in the state qualify for the state meet. Harris also competed in the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays. Joining Harris on the 4x100 was Bryce Bates, Kemauri Evans and Jehmel Rice; and Zak Leija joined Evans, Harris and Rice on the 4x200.
