The Teague baseball team split its games last week.

The Lions suffered a 6-3 setback at Fairfield on April 2, and edged Mexia, 5-4, last Friday in Teague. As a result, Teague (9-11-1, 4-5 in District 20-3A) remains in the playoff hunt.

The Lions visit Westwood at 6 p.m. Friday and host Franklin at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Their game with Buffalo that was rained out Tuesday has yet to be rescheduled.

    FAIRFIELD 6, TEAGUE 3

Fairfield prevailed in a pitcher’s duel between the Eagles’ Cameron Cockerell and Teague’s Bo Bowers, 6-3, on April 2. Both Bowers and Cockerell went the distance on the mound, but ultimately, the Eagles outhit the Lions, 7-4, and also took advantage of five Teague errors.

Only four players recorded hits for the Lions. They were Bowers (1-1, 2 BB), Mario Cuevas (1-3), Trip Egbert (1-3, RBI) and Caden Gonzales (1-4).

    TEAGUE 5, MEXIA 4

A four-run third inning gave Teague the cushion it needed to hang on for a 5-4 victory against Mexia last Friday in Teague. The Lions also outhit the Blackcats, 9-6.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third, Teague put together a string of five hits, a walk and an error to score its runs. Cuevas drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 2 before Barrett Maggard hit an RBI single and Bowers followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2.

Despite giving up a run in the fourth and another in the sixth, the Lions held on for victory. Barrett Maggard pitched the first 5.2 innings for the win, while Gonzales threw the final 1.1 to earn the save.

Barrett Maggard (2-3, 2 RBI), Blake Maggard (2-3) and Brice Skinner (2-3) led Teague at the plate. Bowers (1-2, BB, RBI), Gonzales (1-3) and Cuevas (1-2, BB, RBI) also contributed.
