Jerry Maggard was honored on Saturday night, July 6, at the 94th Annual Teague 4th of July Rodeo for serving the Teague Rodeo for more than 60 years.

Maggard began coming to the Teague Rodeo with his family as a child.

Later on, he became involved, helping out alongside Leslie and Doris Welch.

“He has seen this arena transformed from wooden fences to pipe pens. He and his wife Cissy were here during the construction of the old concrete bleachers,” Teague Rodeo President Brandon Whitaker said. “He has been here as we expanded to add team roping boxes and these grandstands we use today.”

Maggard didn’t just volunteer, he was also an outstanding rodeo contestant. Jerry has been the Ribbon Roping Champion multiple times.

He has been the Wild Cow Milking Champion multiple times. He has set a million barrels and served in countless more ways, too many to list.

He served the Teague Rodeo committee as President for many years, leading it with a true servant’s heart.

“Jerry Maggard is a man of character and integrity,” Whitaker said. “He has raised a family in this arena, seeing his sons compete and serve alongside him. His wife Cissy worked for many years here as well serving right there with him.”

Maggard embodies the spirit of the Teague 4th of July Rodeo.

“The generations before him began building tradition. Jerry held onto those traditions and helped to pass them on to us as we will to future generations.” Whitaker said. “Those traditions are what set us apart & make the Teague Rodeo so special.”

Presenting a special gift to Maggard were his longtime Teague Rodeo member, former President and friend Randy Barger, current President Brandon Whitaker, and Vice President Bubba Welch.

“Jerry, this rodeo would not be here without you - from the bottom of our hearts, thank you,” Whitaker said.
