Kansas food safety and lodging inspectors found more than a dozen Topeka establishments to be out of compliance with state law in June. Kansas law delegates to the Kansas Department of Agriculture the authority to regulate food establishments, food processing plants and lodging establishments. Violations — particularly priority violations linked to causes of foodborne illness — can lead to various consequences, including the immediate closure of an establishment.
Topeka sought seed funds to build more bike lanes. Build Kansas said no.
The Build Kansas Advisory Committee rejected a proposal from the city of Topeka to use federal grant funds to build seven bike lanes across the community. The board rejected the $3.3 million price tag levied on the Build Kansas fund, which would have unlocked more than $13 million in U.S. Department of Transportation funds to construct the bike lanes. The city contributed $0 to the project, relying on the Build Kansas fund to contribute the entire local funding needed to qualify for the federal grant.
What to know about For The Culture KS festival in downtown Topeka
Through business, music, artist, fitness and more, this festival is gearing up for its second year of festivities later this month at the Evergy Plaza in downtown Topeka. Mackenzi Mondesir, fundraising director of For The Culture KS, said although the goal is to celebrate history and Black culture, this year's celebration will also add programs for local business owners.
